Me, Riding!

After all these months of having a farm full of horses, I FINALLY have been able to start riding. It took a while to get tack that would fit, because these draft cross mares have some odd proportions.

I've been riding only Char so far, because she's at least a little experienced with riding, and I want to give my riding muscles (and skills) a chance to come back from their LONG dormancy. I have not ridden regularly for about 15 years, so this is a big deal for me!

We don't have a riding ring yet to practice in, so I've been riding all over our big pasture, which is a lot of fun. Char has been great---just challenging enough, without being super frustrating. With a little more practice, she's going to be fantastic. I just love this mare!

So, here they are... I think these are the first photos taken of me on a horse since 1984!

Now, once I'm a bit more practice, I have a whole bunch of other horses that need to be started under saddle this summer. Can't wait!

Woo-hoo! That's fabulous -- I'm so glad that you're riding again, and you must feel very excited. You really look great, Nancy -- and you already know how I feel about Charybdis, or indeed, any of your horses

Where did you get the saddle -- what size tree is it?

Thanks!

We had to special order the saddle from our tack shop. It's a Wintec All Purpose with the Extra Wide tree (comes with three gullets wider than the basic Wintec set).

She's wearing a 6-inch bit on a normal Wintec horse-sized bridle, with the cheek pieces set middway up the holes, the throat latch on the tightest notch it can go, and the browband and noseband completely removed because they wouldn't fit! She's an odd mix of sizes, that's for sure.

It is great to be riding again, and even though Char is not very experienced, she's been doing pretty well. She's quite a powerhouse of muscle, and no shortage of impulsion, that's for sure. But even when she wants to go-go-GO, she's still manageable and fairly light on the bit. She just needs some fine-tuning on what all the various signals mean.

My husband even rode her around the field today, and he's only ever been on a horse once before... 20 years ago.

Oh, you have no idea how much help I need! In addition to all the normal chores, and the fact that most of these horses I purchased more or less untrained, the whole farm is a "fixer-upper" so I could find work for a whold ARMY of farm help, if I could get it.

I'm trying to talk my older sister into coming down from her farm in Northern Maine for a visit for a few weeks in July and help me give these horses some training. She's been working with horses since before I was born, so I love any chance to learn from her experience.

The Wintec Extra Wide was my first choice in saddle (and, given how many months it took me to get the Thorowgood, maybe I should have stuck with it) -- I thought it looked really great. And it certainly looks wonderful on Char -- I guess the adjustable gullet will help you use it on a number of your horses, too.

She sounds like a great girl -- and it's wonderful that your husband got to ride her, too.

Wow, she's a beauty!! ALL of your horses are beautiful, tho.

Congrats on getting back in the saddle. By the way, that blue pad looks REALLY sharp on her.

She really does. Of course, this is the mare who, shortly after we got her, jumped a 4 1/2 foot gate while pregnant with twins, so I guess her athleticism isn't a big surprise.

Actually, of all my draft-cross horses, Ive been surprised to find that I only have one who is truly "drafty" in her movement and temperament. The others are much more agile and energetic than I was first expecting, which is great, since I want them to pass that on to their foals.

Char is currently bred to Art Deco. I can't wait to see what she produces next spring!
