It's a good thing JRTs are tough since they get into sooo much trouble. I had one several years ago take on a PACK of Rotts and Pitbulls. He made it through and never did learn to back down from any size fight. I sure hope your guy pulls through as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thank you guys so much for your kind words.
Jon is on his way home to go hunting! Bear season is ending today, so hopefully he can find it. I do NOT like the idea that there is a bear on our property. If there is, I guess that is where all my cats went.

Hope we can find it.

I'd be very surprised if it was a bear that did the damage. Their first instinct when attacked is to "paw" the attacker and even experienced hunting dogs are often killed by this. Teeth come in to play as a secondary defense mechanism. I'd guess, depending on the size of the wounds, you're looking at a dog or coyote attack.

Poor Cooper. Sending lots of healthy, healing wishes for a rapid and uncomplicated recovery. Those silly little JRTs get into the biggest scrapes.

Brave little JRT! Having seen bear take down elk, and knowing their tempers, I also do not think it a bear, but likely a dog or dog/coyote cross. Even a badger, if you have them. Quite possible that Cooper unwittingly took on an adversary far too much for him.
Am fairly certain a bear would have finished what it started, unless it was a very young one. Have seen a dachshund with wounds similar to that after being grabbed by a coyote and biting the coyote hard enough on the nose to be dropped--just a few feet from it's back door so the owner could chase off the coyote.

Hope he heals well, he certainly is the right breed to be stubborn enough to!
