I'm Back and with Questions

Hi Horsetopia gang!

I don't know if many of you remember me or not. I was only on this forum for a few weeks before I had to disappear for a while. In case you dont recall, I'm Wolfie, the math teacher with two horses (Phoebe and Wolfgang).

Well, a lot has happened since my last post. Things were going pretty good. If you rememer, I posted about how our old dog Beethoven past away. My husband and I decided to adopt a dachshund from the local pound. Her name is Sassy and she's 3 years old.

My horse Phoebe was doing better with backing up (if you recall this was our little training issue). Then one day I was riding her down the road when I car came past. I asked her to move out of the way and she reared up really high, turned around, and took off back to the barn. I couldn't stop her so I jumped off. Luckily, I only sprained my wrist and got bruised pretty bad.

My husband got on her the next day and asked her to ride out, and she immediately reared up. This time she fell over on top of him. A trip to the ER revealed that he had a concussion, but luckily he's fine now and can start to ride again soon.

Now I don't know hwat to ]do with her. Phoebe used to be so sweet and gentle, but now I'm terrified of her and I don't trust her. I can't afford to keep her as a pet, but I want her to go to a good home. What would you do? Do you have any advice?

Thanks and sorry this is so long

Welcome back. I am sorry your hubby got hurt and I hope that he is doing better. I understand What you are saying about your horse that did this to him. It is not easy to trust one again after that. I am happy you are back.

I remember you----the kids loved your horse avatar made from the geometric shapes---they have fractiles they play with. Glad to hear you found a new doggie to fill the "puppy place" in your heart. So sorry to hear that Phoebe reared up on both you and hubby . I am glad that you both escaped with out serious injury. If you don't get many responses to your problem with Phoebe, try posting in the general advice or training sections-------I am hoping someone may have a suggestion for you, or at least give you words of comfort from their own experiences. Our family is pretty green. Genie is 3 and just started under saddle--only the trainer has been on her. Tess will be 6 this year and the kids ride her, but I am hesitant to get on-----I know, silly after I dreamed of this my whole life. I have not had the experience of riding my own horse and having it act up. Best wishes that something will work out.

Hi I remember you too. glad you and hubby did not get terribly hurt, perhaps starting back to basics to build up your confidence and your mares.
Keep us posted and do not go away from HT for so long.

Hi, welcome back! I am so glad that you and hubby are both OK. I am no help with the rearing, though. I had one that started rearing, I sent her out to a trainer, who was able re-train her and sell her for me. I did not think I would ever trust her with my kids again, so I did not want her back, even trained...

Rearing...what a way to ruin a good ride. My horse had some issues with rearing last year, mainly due to fear. I finally gave up riding and just went back to basic groudwork for the remainder of the summer. By the fall, he seemed much better, although the rearing episodes are still in the back of my mind. I would suggest getting a professional to help you solve this problem. It will help you with your confidence and hopefully solve your horse's rearing problem.

Hi Again and Welcome Back!

Glad to hear that no one has been seriously hurt. Indeed I would try and find a professional trainer who can help you sort through the rearing issue. It may be something that can be fixed for the both of you and if not, it may help you find a suitable home for her, especially if you feel you can no longer trust her.
