HI, From Millet Alberta Canada

Hi, I am a new to the horse world, I have always loved horses as a little girl I always wanted one, but mom said NO WAY we lived always in a large city.

4 years ago my fiance and I built our dream home on 11 acre parcel of land, never used 10 of it, just letting it grow wild.

My neighbors own and breed horses, I went there to visit one day, well I absolutely fell in love with a beautiful Filly named Meagan.

Meagan, is now my inspiration to learn about horses, I don't have any experience with them, and she is not even halter broke ( sad ) So, I've decided to join ridding lessons currently on my 2nd month.

Through learning about them, I was in the beginning hopeful that I could one day own Meagan, train her and live in bliss, but as I learn my bubble is burst, green + green = black and blue... I know.

Meagan and I have this incrediable bond, but I wouldn't dare to even try to ride her she needs alot of training and more years she is only 2.

I haven't givin up yet, even if i can get her to where a really great home would take her, as she sits now she wouldn't be worth much. So, I do try to get her used to halter and reaching her hooves so that a ferrier will be able to approach her without problem.

I am wanting to own my own horse soon, my trainner recommends one full year riding lessons then I should be ready.

I am currently learning western I am not interested in show just trail mostly. So, I found this webforum to learn all I can about horses/training/ and eventually finding a horse or a horse to find me.

Meagan is my first horse love, and I will compare all horse love to the affection she shows me, to finding a ridable learning horse that can teach me so maybe one day I will be a strong influence in Meagan and I can teach her.

Can a beginner train to halter/ground manners etc? Is there methods or alink I can learn how to best approach teaching her? She has brothers and sisters too, that are less then halter broke I am always working with them too... and they all adore me.. nostrile flaring naaing when I come around the corner the weanling lets me pretty much do anything to him but lean down to his hoofs he gets a wee bit skittish

Anyways, I hope to ask alot of questions and read alot from your experiences pleased to meet you all!

Welcome to the forum, it's a good place to come and learn, and meet new people! I'm probably about an hour and a half from you!

I'm not sure what to say about Meagan, but if you had the money to put her into training for quite a while, and the trainer approved of her, it could be a possibility, and then continue with lessons. If you really have your heart set on her, maybe you could have your trainer do an assessment on her, to get their honest opinion if she could be a possibility for you... got my fingers crossed for you!

A beginner can still do lots of things with horses, and the more you can do with them, and get them to accept, the better - for both you and them! Good luck!

I think young beginners can learn more than the older ones strictly because their brain capacity can absorb more....it's also like comparing an experienced computer operator with one trying to get a job at a retail place that uses a totally different software....I was told one time by a manager that they want people off the streets that hasn't had any experience before so that they can be taught the proper way (that's good for their own business).....just because someone has experience under their belt doesn't mean they over-ride or are better than the newbies......the old saying is, "be careful of the toes you step on today because it could be the ass you kiss tomorrow" Same goes with horse trainers I think.....I know quite a bit about riding, racing, etc but I'll be the first to tell you that I don't know squat about posting, english riding, holding a TWH into the correct gait or jumping....I am just real good at flat out racing, barrels, cross country or endurance.....so, if you are just now learning, you will succeed as long as you have patience, heart and understand the horse you are working with.....good luck, I'm sure you'll do great....you already seem to have a knack with the equines on the ground...and that's what no one showed me until I was way older. That's the foundation and you build from there.

Hey there! Welcome from sunny South Florida! Starting from the ground up is the only way to learn......Just spending time with horses will allow you to get a "feel" for them! Good Luck to you

I resemble that remark!

Welcome aboard BlackMumba - this is indeed a good place to learn, but you will also need to get bumped on to your hiney a few times and get a few toes stepped on...it's all part of the learning process.

Hi! Welcome from GA!
I commend you for recognizing that Meagan may not be a good first horse for you, but still being willing to try to work with her and her siblings to help prepare them for life. You are doing a good thing!
