Smokey's training journal *Pics Added*

I received Smokey this morning around 11 o'clock from GBar and her husband. We took him to the trainer's barn and put him in his stall. We visited for a little while and then they headed for Texas.

Because of their great ground work with Smokey the trainer got a first ride on Smokey this evening. This wasn't planned but since Smokey was way ahead of any horse he had received he wanted to try and see what he could do. My trainer saddled him without any problems, took him to the round pen and lunged him for 10 mintues and Smokey was so responsive that he ground drove him for 10 minutes and then decided to see if Smokey would stand still if he put his foot in the stirrup. Smokey took one step forward and the trainer back him up to where he was and then stepped up and down a few times and Smokey just stood there. I thought that was going to be it and turned off my camera. The next thing I knew my trainer was sitting in the saddle and Smokey was just standing there like it was nothing. The trainer got off and fixed a rein with the lunge rope on a bitless bridle and then got back in the saddle. It took a little encouragement for Smokey to go forward. Light tapping with the heelsof his boots(no spurs).

At first Smokey tried to back up but the trainer just kept tapping until he took the first step forward. Smokey then realized what he wanted and they made a lap around the roundpen and the trainer called it a day.

Pictures are coming and I will add them later but I have dial up and many pictures so it will take a while for them to upload.

Finally the pics are here:
Getting brushed off before the saddle is put on. The trainer's son is saddling his horse in the barn:

This picture shows how "wild" Smokey is. Notice lead rope on the ground

Saddled up and headed to the round pen

His moment of silliness

Lunging

Taking a break while ground driving lines attached

Ground driving

Love this pic when finished ground driving

Weight in stirrup

more to come

Wanted to add that Smokey never even broke a sweat, just that one moment of silliness and then took everything in stride. The trainer's son kept saying "that horse has been rode before. There is no way that horse hasn't been rode before."

So Pat and Val-no I am not giving him back! He has already proven himself to me. Everyone keep a watch out because this horse is going places

He sure has a beautiful head on him!! I am a little confused, though, FG, is he just staying with you while in training? While Val and Pat are vacationing? I apparently missed something......please help.....

Wow, what a great horse! That is so awesome. That is truly a testament to Val and Pat's early training, that's for sure. He has to be a super smart horse, too, though. And really gorgeous, as a bonus.

Smokey turned 3 in April this year. He is the stud I bought from GBar. They did extensive ground training and manners on that boy.

This is the first horses that my trainer has ever gotten that was so advanced in his training. He just wanted to see where he needed to start from.

Smokey needs his wolf teeth pulled which is why he was not started in a bit. I will have the vet out next week to have the wolf teeth pulled.

Good for you!!

He's handsome, smart and quiet. What more could you want? He looks like he's built to be a good working horse. Congrats!

Congrats on your purchase and to Smokey for being such a good boy. Are you going to keep him a stud?

Yes, I am keeping him as a stud.

Went out yesterday eveing to see Smokey and the trainer was riding him in the big pasture behind the barn with his son and his son's geldng. My trainer said he may take him with him when they go penning on Thursday night to see what he will do. Mostly just to let him (Smokey) see what is going on.
