I got on!

Dezirae today! It was so thrilling to finally realize what it feels like to sit across her back. I decided to work her this morning in her little surcingle get up, she was an angel. Afterwards, to cool off, we went out back and swam in the lake some. This is where I got on her. I just laid across her back at first and she didnt seem the least bit bothered by it. Then I got all the way on and we even walked a little through the weeds, munching as we went. I only stayed on for maybe a minute or so. Dezirae wont be 3 until March so I didnt want to over do it. I cant wait to get on her next spring and ride for real!

All the horses I break to ride always get the "lake treatment". I just get on them bareback in the lake and let them carry me around. That way if they decide to freak or get silly, well I land in the water and wont be sore the next day!

Anyways, I just had to share that moment with you guys. Im smiling from ear to ear.

I've heard of that way to break horses before. I can't remember where, but someone told me that's how some of the Indians used to do it. Wonderful and scary feeling when you first get on one, isn't it?

I break all my horses that way. Ive never had an issue with it so far. *knocks on wood*

It was really exciting to get on her. Im always drooling at how she looks jogging and loping around in the round pen. I cant wait to see what that is actually like to sit next spring! So far she'll wear all her tack and does ground drive at a walk. She knows alot of things already and I havent been working her a whole lot. She's so smart! I havent come across a horse this smart in a long time. If she keeps that up it'll be a breeze under saddle.

Sure send Dillion on down! He'd have a blast swimming and playing in the lake. Heck while you're at it, BJ can come too.

They would love it in the heat.. I don't think our swimming pool is big enough to try it here..

Best of all, they can go swimming nearly all year! My horses hardly ever stop to think that it might be too cold to go for a swim. The love the water.

Togan, my QH gelding, does the same thing! He gets in at the edge, paws like mad then plops down to roll. Its hilarious. I have to watch Dixie though. She literally tries to swim across the lake. Then that causes Zippy to freak and try to follow her. Its a mess.

That sounds neat! Congratulations. We have several here who like to take mud baths in the ponds too. Wonder what they would think about riding in a lake?

That first time you sit on them feels wonderful doesn't it? Congratulations, sopunds like your girl is coming along wonderfully.

Wish I had a pond to put mine in, and yes, it makes for a much better landing spot if they get the sillies!
