My horse is moving away

My friends have just bought a new property, I am not sure how much land, but they have a HUGE covered barn, HUGE corrals and arenas, and they are getting 3 or 4 horses for there kids. I only have a small corral. They want to take Midnight over to there place and keep him there until I can get a bigger arena and I can go over to there place and keep on training Midnight. He will still be my horse and I can use there other horses to ponie my horse on trails or just to use them to ride. It's all for free too. I am thinking I am going to do it, but just want your guys' opinions. What do you think I should do?

I dream of the day when I can have a place to keep mine at home. I can't imagine having that and giving it up, but I can understand the temptation of a big barn and all those perks. I don't envy you your decision, but I think I'd keep him at home. There are many things that could happen that could really cost this friendship - horses are accident prone, what if something happened to him or one of their kids. I'd be nervous about the blame game unless you come up with a boarding contract and they are well insured. In this litiginous age even families are suing each other. I know how tempting it is to totally trust people you know, that's why I have a stolen TB and a detective on the case. Just bear in mind, CYA - protect yourself!

I've none them forever. They said if anything happens to there kids, horses, or my horse they will pay for everything. They just want a calm horse there kids can use on the ground not in the saddle and Midnight is a very calm boy on the ground and he loves kids. They said I can go over there whenever I wanted even when they aren't home. So I don't think they are going to steal him. They are really close friends.

I agree that I would prefer to keep my horses at home. I boarded for years and now that I have my herd home with me I could never imagine them not being here.
It sounds like a nice offer, but again IMO there is nothing better than seeing them right outside my window.

Have a contract drawn up that protects you as well as them. Have everything spelled out clearly. But anytime you have a situation like that feelings can and usually do get hurt. Friends and business together normally doesn't work. Now if you do go through with it I wish you well. It does sound tempting.

That's the only problem. Not seeing him everyday. Since I currently don't have any big pasture for him to run in, while he was over there, I could build a bigger one. Then since they will have other horses I can just bring him back to my place. I really want him to be around other horses (he's my only one) and I want him to get more excersise and a big place to run for a while till he can do it here at my place. They said they will help me finish him but I would have to do work for them if I didn't want to pay. That would also go if I wanted to use there other horses for competitions.

I think riding with other people will be more fun, and if it will allow you to improve what you have for your horse, then I would send Midnight to the new place! I agree to have stuff in writing (like their kids can't work with Midnight without an adult around, and that they cannot ride him, as well as what you can and cannot do on their place), and you should also be prepared to help out with things even if they don't ask/expect it...treat their place like it is your own.

Having a horse out your back window is nice, but horses like to have companions, room to roam, and having someone to help you and ride with you makes training a green horse safer and more fun. After all, if you miss him too much you can always bring him home!

They are suppose to be coming today so there kids can looks and him and pamper him! I have this big bare area in my yard and I am thinking of putting a big arena right there for daily turnout and riding and then in the moring and nights I will use the small corral for feeding him. It's going to be hard driving up there every weekend but I would do anything for my horse!! He'll have a good time over there anyway. I was thinking about getting a mare for riding and breeding so Midnight will have atleast one companion all the time.
