Update on Blue Jay

Well he has only been being ridden like once a week. We got him all situated in his last home and he was pretty spook free. Was doing great on trails. We were riding him in a hack and he loved it. No problems. Now I have moved him about 1 hour south to my sisters and having the same problems I did when I first got him. I guess he needs time to settle into his new home. He has been here for a month now.

My sister and I wanted to take him down the street to the equestrian park and he was not having it!! There were dogs barking at both sides. He started spinning and dancing around. My sister was on him and she is not afraid of horses whatsoever but she ended up dismounted him. He was trembling with fear. Also the big storm was coming. I am going to attempt to do it again tomorrow and Im nervous. He really is a good horse and very well trained. He is just one of those horses that needs time. Wish me luck. Im dying to ride him at this park. Hopefully I wont be one with the pavement!!

Here's wishing you lots of luck girl!

Sometimes when they haven't been rode for a while they are like that. Is there another horse you can get to go out with you for the first few times? Sometimes that helps, especially on a new "trail".

Aww, poor boy was just scared.

Good luck with him! And be safe, I learned the hard way how pavement tastes, and I regret putting myself and my horse in that situation. Bluejay sounds like a great horse, just give him some time.

Dogs barking, storm coming, ours would be acting up, too! He'll calm down, he did it before, it's just a new place, new surroundings. I often wonder if they get just "homesick" for a place they knew and were familiar with. Ty acted like a totally different horse from the one we saw when we went to buy him for about 2 months, he's starting to relax now.

He has always been a show horse. I paid a trainer in his last home to help him with the trails and he really came a long way. Hopefully I wont have to do that again. I might just walk him down the street, we will see. I guess he may never be that horse that I can just put in my trailer and haul him off to trail ride or maybe he will........Time will tell

The "storm coming" may have had more impact on him than you can imagine.
Maybe your trainer would make the one hour drive to make Blue Jay comfortable in his new home too....good luck, Tanya, he is a beautiful boy.

We rode today

Well i didnt ride him down the street, I physically walked him. I feel somewhat silly to do that but Im nervous a little because it is all new to him. I have been more nervous to ride since my husband passed away because I am it for my children. Went to the public equestrian park and We got to the arena and I mounted him and he was very full of himself. Luckily there was 4 very calm horses in there. He listened but it wasnt the most relaxed ride we have had. He is supposed to be a show horse and shouldve been comfortable in the arena. I know I have to start over with him. Has that happened to other people?? I mean I had him trail trained for 2-3 months and he was doing great and now its like he forgot! He is such a sweet horse though and I love him but its back to the drawing board

Sometimes you do have to go back to the beginning; but with patience and persistence, you'll get him to where he was.

Is that him in your Avatar?

Thank you!! He was nice and clean that day. Now I cannot say he looks like that. He is a tough one to keep clean but looks so nice when he is. He is a challenge though!!! But I know we will get there!

Yeah Yeah Yeah!!! I am so excited!! I walked him down to the equestrian center and than he was a little hard to mount. He was testing me alot. I met some friends there and one of them got on him and rode him and he did perfect. So I rode him the rest of the time and than all the way down the street back home. He did great and Im so excited!!! Just wanted to share!

I think he is just one of those horses that will test you, especially if you are showing nerves. Just try to have confidense in your self and your horse.

Congrats on your accomplishments Today.

I have a horse that refuses to even let put a saddle on, when bad storms are approching. But any other day he is good.

I always enjoy reading about Blue Jay. I've been following him since you bought him. Glad to hear he's starting to settle in and that your continuing to work with him . I have one that I've had for a year and she is still testing me but we're making baby steps and I love her so much I'm willing to be patient with her progress, I do have other horses to ride but I guess I still like a little challenge even at my age. LOL

Try putting him up against a fence, then he can't swing away from you.

I Had a gelding who would NOT stand still for mounting, it was awful! The former owner told me he did that, but I still didn't expect how much of a PITA he'd be about it, I did a lot of work with him on that. When I'd go to even step towards him, he'd start moving away or circling, so I'd force him to keep doing it, until he finally decided to stand, at which point I'd see if he'd stand for me to get on, and he usually wouldn't , so I'd send him around and around again. Sometimes it took about 15 minutes to get on, but I refused to get on until he stood still, and made him realize that actually standing still was a lot less work for him.

If it's not stopped, it's omething that will get worse, and become dangerous. Getting someone to just hold the horse while a person mounts isn't really the answer either, it's basically just preventing him from doing it that time, but doesn't actually teach him anything, and there won't always be someone there. Just thought I'd mention that, since I've seen people take that approach too, and it definetly doesn't fix things.

Glad to hear things are improving with Blue Jay, hope you can get through this issue and things just get better and better
