Freedom's Training Journal

This is the training journal on Freedom, a yearling blm mustang. I adopted her on 8/1/2008.
Day 1: unloaded her into her pen, wormed her

Day 2: hosed down, brushed down, bridle path cut, will stand while I hold the lead
Day 3: worked on leading and turning

Day 4: introduced her to horsie cookies, they were a big hit

Day 5: took the drag off of her

Day 6: took her out of her pen for a walk, spooked a few times but remained under control with the leadline.

So far she has been an excellent student and is very much a love bug.

a drag it when you leave the lead rope attached to the halter for them to 'drag' so they step on it and learn to give to preasure

Today we worked on her letting me pet her all the way down her legs in preperation for teaching her to give her hooves. We also worked on lunging since she likes to circle me to avoid leading. It is kinda funny she will lead one minute and then act like she has never done it before. I get the feeling she is seeing what I will let her get away with, cause she isn't acting like she is spooked or scared.

Today we practiced our leading in the yard and a little bit of lunging. I also turned her loose in the yard, with a drag on, to see how she would handle the larger area. She sniffed around a bit and then decided that the big, green, plastic teeter totter (the big plastic ones by fisher price) looked like a fun thing to play with. She picked it up by one of the handles then dropped it. It was cute. I caught her again and put her back in her pen. So all in all a good day and one step closer to being put in the larger yard.

Had to miss working with Freedom yesterday because of my riding accident and it showed today. She was spooking at my every move and wouldn't come to me, not even for a horsie cookie. So I just sat in her pen for awhile and let her get used to me being there again. When she finally came over I gave her a cookie and put her lead on. We again took a walk around the yard. I let her eat some of the yummy green vines that are growing throught the fence. For todays lesson I decided to try line lunging her without the benefit of her pen walls. She lunged both ways at a walk. I am so proud of her and how willing she is. I am hoping to be able to let her loose in the yard soon so she can have more room but with how things started today I feel I need to wait another couple of days. She has leading down pat.

Thanks.
She is officially out of her intial pen and into the back yard. She seems to enjoy the extra room and hasn't 'tried' the fence. She is letting me catch her fairly easily. Still need work on the catching but leading and lunging at a walk we have down. We have had rain most of the day for two days now so it has slowed how much I am out with her.

Continued rain here. I feel like I need to build an ark or something. I have been working on catching with Freedom in between rain showers. She nickers to me everytime she sees me and is approaching me willingly. Had a slight set back a few days ago. The neighbors had a party all nite and when I went out to feed and hay Freedom the next morning she was totally freaked out. I tried to walk up to her and catch her, like I had been doing for days, but she wouldn't let me catch her. She went over to the fence and pushed on it. Of course the fence didn't move, so she tried to jump it. She ended up flipping over it. So the great task of trying to catch her while she was spooked. I knew just trying to catch her without an aid of somesort would be pointless from the experence of trying to catch her in the yard. But I knew her weakness. I haltered Moon and led him out to the lot she had ran into. She followed Moon right back into her pen. She was still easily spooked and me even trying to put hay into her pen make her shake. I gave her a hour to calm down and went out and sat outside of her pen and talked to her. She finally calmed down enough for me to catch her and put a drag back on her. She is still not back to where we were but we are working on it. I don't know what happend that nite to spook her so bad for so long but it has set us back to the beginning again other than she still will nicker to me. I let her out of the pen back into the yard after she calmed down and I had made adjustments to the fence to make it taller. So I am starting from scratch on her training.

Today Freedom got her first 'walk' out of the yard. We went to the lot next door and let her graze. She jumped a little at the new sounds and sights but handled it well.

I love your training journal. You are doing a great job and Freedom seems to be getting quite attached to you already. I can't wait to hear more.

She is coming along really well. She is an absolute love bug. She will be starting trailer training and have her first vet visit the first week of Sept. Time for shots and a check up. So to prepare her for the experience of a vet office, we are starting to take walks out of the yard and down the road (which isn't very busy). The vets office is right next to a hiway and train tracks, so I want to try to get her used to at least the sound of cars close to her.

Lots of progress. Freedom loaded in my two horse like a champion. She is on a full acre pasture now and will be on a three acre pasture in October. She is getting good at standing tied and I even put her on a high line so she could graze the lot next door (she was supervised the whole time). I also banded her mane in the diamond pattern. It bothered her just after I was done because she is used to her mane being on both sides of her neck but she settled quickly. I have pics of it but can't post til my internet is back up from me moving.

She didn't mind me doing it but when I was done she was a little prancy. I guess the feel of it got to her. I am trying to train her mane to stay on one side of her neck.

Freedom is doing well on the acre. She hasn't been spooky or antsy since moving her there away from the partying neighbors. She also has been letting me catch her. I think she is going to be more than ready for the three acre pasture in Oct.
