An Itch I want to scratch!

Out of the clear blue yesterday afternoon, I began day dreaming about Gypsie. Noe this is not unusual. The wierd part is I began dreaming about riding her english. She has a lovely post trot and now its all I can think about. Gypsie and I have become the best team one has every seen. I have never had the opertunity to trust a horse that I have owned. I trust Gypsie more than anything in the world. She will probably never win any ribbons or metals, and im sure she wont be able to jump the moon. She is barely exceeding 15.0 hands, but I love her. For those of you who dont know Gypsie is the 5 YO mare in my avatar. She is filled out quite a bit now and she is also expected to foal in April. Neither Gypsie or myself know anything riding english but I betcha we could learn. Aside from finding an english trainer is there anything we should know about this before we dive in head first? Is there anyone Gbarm, Seefarm anyone else who is familiar with Gypsie and I who would oppose this idea? Any and all comments welcome. Oh and please tell me how you think she would look in an english saddle!

How is her movement - does she move like an english horse - that would be your first decision if you plan to ever show - if you are only planning to play with her for your enjoyment, I say go for it..

There are some great training books out there - but you might have more fun with a few lessons first from an english barn.. the seat posture and leg is different, as well as learning to teach your horse to work off the bit with light contact..

Heather, agree with Gbar....For showing her movement would be of importance. But there is nothing wrong with riding english or western on any horse. More of a preference for the rider and what they are comfortable with. Even some very typey western horses can do well in english, maybe not winning it big, but be respectable. My big gelding is a prime example. He showed both western and english, so I say go for it. You'll never know what you guys can do unless you try.

Well, I have never shown before and I dont have a huge desire to do so. It would be purely for pleasure at this point. I would like to experience showing maybe someday but it all seems so stiff. Im more of a balls to the wall kinda girl LOL. Moving on... I am going to look into this and I think we will go for it! I want to learn and Gypsie needs a job. I will let you all know when Im ready to start shopping for my first english saddle WOOOT!!!! If I posted video of gypsie moving could some of you maybe give your opinion on what her job should be? Iv been a pleasure rider all my life, ya know just for fun oh and I barrel raced as teenager Iv been idol for 2 yrs now. I am wanting to give Gypsie and I goal or at least a title.

Start looking for some good used Crosbys.. those are by far my favorite.. and I personally like Jane Savoy for book ideas on riding english and basic dressage - I am sure if you ask, there are a lot of others out there that can give you some great book ideas to help you on your quest..

I think you will enjoy it.. it is different enough to make you and Gypsy both have to focus, and that in itself will increase your partnership bond.. Besides, you really don't mind spending more time with your mare do you!

I totally agree. I have a discontinued Crosby Softride, and I LOVE IT! Ive also never been uncomfy in a Crosby saddle.
