Another fun lesson

I wasn't planning to ride today (too many other things to do) but Meg came home and said, "Tack up, Mom. I'm giving you another lesson." It didn't take more than a few minutes to forget all of the other things I was supposed to do.

The weather is cool (about 45) and Clancy was feeling very energetic so Meg decided to tire him out a bit. She asked for a canter and he did one of those - Yahoo! I want to run and buck a little! - kind of things. Meg calls them baby bucks as he is only 5 and he is just feeling his oats. She worked him pretty hard though. I decided that today was not going to be a day for timid me to practice cantering. I did work on lots of other things but at a walk or trot. I had a great time.

When Meg got back on, she decided to try some different things with Clancy. Where's the camera when you need it? She rode him while she was hanging off of each side. She rode him while she was sitting on him backwards. She dismounted and jumped back on while he continued moving. It was really fun to watch. I think her goal is to teach Clancy to tolerate the unexpected and stay calm. To his credit, he continued on as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. I think she is preparing him for the day that someone less skilled at riding does something unexpected. That would be me!

She is fun to be around. She always wanted a horse as a kid but we couldn't get her one. She would ride whenever she could finagle an invitation from someone. It didn't take her long to fall in love with horses. She didn't have the advantage of having her own horse or competing in shows, or having lessons until she majored in Equine Science and Business at Morrisville in NY. She learned a lot there. The thing that I like about her and horses is that she just truly enjoys them. That is what I am looking for also, nothing more and nothing less.

What a small world! SUNY Morrisville! I just brought home my 4 year old Draft Cross from their colt starting program. What a fantastic job they did with him. I can't wait to get out of work every night to hurry home and ride him.

I was very impressed with their program. It wasn't just about riding. They learned so much more. We are thinking of bringing one of our horses their for some training this spring if we can work it out. They do a great job.
