Question Two Questions...

Okay, I'm training two different horses right now and I have a question about each.

First off, I'm training a Pinto Miniature Gelding named Romeo. He's skittish about a saddle pad (This is Western BTW), as well as anything touching his hind quarters. I've got to get him 'kid safe' in about a month... (Time limits on training stink... Silly manager) Any tips?

Second off, I'm working with a Well Broken mare who is just now being weaned from her foal. I'm only working with her three days a week at most, atleast once in the arena. She goes English and Western. My question for you all about her is: How should I ride her?
She's neck reining very well and gets mad at me when I go two handed, but still can jump. She's a sweet girl and I really like her, but I know that she's going to be doing more Western then English, although, I am an English Rider (Hunter/Jumper) and have recently went to Western. Any Suggestions?

Any and all help would be great!

First with the little gelding: Lots of desensitizing. I use an old towel, and place it where the saddle pad goes, and then we walk, graze stand for grooming etc. Every 4-5 minutes I slide the towel back further to the rear. I just keep them occupied with fun nice stuff till they realize the towel/pad is no big deal. How is he with his legs? If he has leg issues as well, start there with touch, holding rubbing with hands and a soft cotton rope. Then go to the towel/pad. I also use it to wipe and lay and move all over the body till they figure out it is not going to eat them.

For the mare, you could ride her two handed but on a loose rein. I would have her teeth checked first, as this may be the issue with direct reining versus neck reining. Two hands can still go loose just over exagerate to get the neck reining. Make a big triangle so to speak.

Thank you SO much! I will try that. The mare is getting her feet done monday and I will suggest floating as well. Since these guys are not really mine, I can't do too much.

Anyone else?
