one step forward...diagnosis: PMS

long story short, i have sadie going over a small jump and logs at a walk, trot, and we're working on getting a canter...and i'm also bridling her and standing on a two step and working on giving to the bit from there...

i put my foot on her side and rubbed back and forth...a little reaction, but didn't move forward. proceeded to move my leg up onto her back, no reaction whatsoever...moved my foot all over her back, onto her rump, and finally....over...and stood there. my left foot was still well planted on the step, but the slightest adjustment on my part would have put me all the way on her. yay us right?

go out the next day to work on the same thing....EXPLOSION!!!!! CRASH BOOM BANG! she wouldn't have any of it. wouldn't even move over close enough to the step for me to touch her with the tip of my boot. swishing the tail, stomping the feet, tossing her head...she even tried to nip me, but she quit that in a hurry. little miss princess was not cooperating...i did get off the step and lunge her a bit and work on giving from the ground...

mares...oh what a joy to work with some days, and a pain in the neck the next.

It must be something in the air. My 10 year old QH gelding-they are supposed to be so much more stable than mares has been around all sorts of crinkly noised things and decides that he is scared of plastic bags. I think it's because he is in a catch pen healing from an abcess and away from his herd-makes him nervous.

That is the story of my horse owning life!

Mares

On the bright side, I guess it makes us appreciate the good days that much more!

I agree! There IS something in the air!!!! Miss Sophie (great-grandma, by all accounts) has made attempts to nip, kick, etc...

*shaking head* You'd think it was spring!

story behind the diagnosis: went out just to love on her a bit. we haven't been getting along the greatest, so decided to just do some one on one love time. started out fine. just told her about my day and brushed her. she munched on her hay and looked at me like "you know what i did today? i walked in a circle, pooped, and walked in another circle....you think YOU got issues?" then she turned around and gave me a look like "ok ok you got it rough, i sympathize" and put her head in my arms and started to doze.

all of a sudden it was just like her tail was on fire! she yanked her head up, spun around and shot out of the lean to like the devil himself was out to get her! then ran around the pen once and came back, blew in my face, and put her head back in my arms....

then i went out of her pen to go get the hose to water her, and i let the dogs out to romp a bit and stretch their legs, came back and she was pawing at Honey and had her ears flat against her head. she proceeded to paw at the fence, toss her head, trot around and go back to munching her hay.

new mare condition: Pissy Mare Syndrome...aka PMS...
