Parelli, and what is it?!

Just thought I would show my ignorance to the world, but what exactly is parelli. I'll see horses advertised as "Parelli level one", and then I think "oh that is nice..." and move on my merry way because I don't know what they are talking about. I'd also like to know how it varies from other trainings (the good, bad, and ugly points about it), and why you like to use it.

Thanks for the input!

Parelli isn't a "what" it's a who - he's a trainer who has produced a popular series of instructional materials about horse training, much like Clinton Anderson.

Lots of people swear by his methods and I too was swept up in his energy when I went to one of his conferences. He is an amazing rider and no doubt what he teaches is true but it is sooooo expensive and you have to be a member of his club to get any decent deals or access to him. I can't afford his stuff so I have to settle for other's.

Parelli is just one of a number of horsemen and -woman who teach natural horsemanship techniques. The Horse Whisperer, if you've seen the movie or read the book, is loosely base on another natural horsemanship trainer. You'll see names like Monty Roberts, Tom Dorrance, Parelli, Clinton Anderson. Dorrance and Roberts are the gurus, the granddaddies of NH.

Natural Horsemanship basically uses the innate way that horses learn as the basis for teaching. A lot is about the relationship that you develop with your horse, one of respect and partnership. Interpreting horse behavior, thinking about their perspective as prey animals, and giving them time to work things out.

I study Parelli with my horses (not always effectively or well, but it's an ongoing process!). Basically, if a horse is advertised as Parelli Level 1, it means that someone has been through the basic "seven games" with that horse. It doesn't mean the horse does "tricks" or has any special abilites, but might mean that the horse is more trusting of humans. MIGHT.

Go to the website if you have time--it's cool stuff.
