So some of you may remember my post about me riding Baylor in speed events and then taking him into a pleasure class. I was really worried that he wouldn't do either one well. His biggest talent lies in pleasure and halter classes. BUT he was bought to be used in barrels and he'd make a good barrel horse. Not the fastest horse in the pen, but the most consistent who does not knock over.
So far so good. I am not yet running him through the patterns. I am asking for some pep in his step through the patterns at a lope and then I run back. And then I take him into pleasure. So far he has not remotely balked at the gate and when he goes in the ring, he is not antsy at all. So I hope it will stay this way!!!!! Just a little update!!!

That's good news! I always thought it would be difficult for a horse to move from a pleasure or a trail event and then to barrels and poles but my horse knew exactly what to do when I changed his tack and put on his protective gear. I sure wish I still had him.
Yes, it is amazing how the horses know when to *pep* up !! I used to show the APHA circuit and start the day with halter, showmanship, EP, WP,Trail, then the fun........barrells and poles. As exhausted as my horse felt under saddle during the flat classes, you put that lightweight barrel saddle on him, his leg gear and little snaffle......just point and hold on !!!!! Ahhh, the goood ole' days !!!
Thanks everyone!!! My instructor said that key to it is to not drill him so much on the barrels and stuff and make most of our ring work about pleasure.
So we are trying that now!!!
