Bit Options/Problems

I have a young girl that I just started teaching. She has a 20 yo saddlebred that she uses for hunter hack. He won't stop or listen with a kimberwick snaffle bit so the previous trainer put him in a Tom Thumb Pelham and he throws his head and rears with that bit. His teeth are fine and he's a 'hard mouth' horse. I tried him in what i believe what a slow twist egg butt snaffle with a flash and the rider reported him as more relaxed and forward in the jumps. Is there another bit that would work for this horse. Open to any suggestions...

More info he was bought from a jumping academy and in my personal experience they do use flashes with a lot of their horses. Could this have helped him as well??

You can't use flash around here in hunters or hacks. Just Jumpers & Dressage.

I like a thick twisted snaffle as long as its in good hands. How does the slow twist work without the flash??

didn't try

I didn't try him without the flash but will definitely try that tomorrow.

At shows he bites down on his bit and gets so anxious about horses especially mares. He is gelded but I'm definitely thinking gelded way to late in life. He can't be around mares without getting studdy and wanting to mount them and he takes that into the show ring.

Wow , thats gotta be hard to deal with.

How about trying something with a roller & copper. I know I have a twisted three piece with a copper roller in the middle. It might keep his mouth satisfied and a little softer...... and stop him from bitting down on it.....

I will also go through the collection and see what I can find that might work.
