Coming Soon to the Training Forum!

Greetings Horsetopians!

A team of members has been working on some Forum-wide improvements. One of the things we will be adding is a (hopefully) weekly Training Topic!

We'll be posting series of discussions about a specific topic (i.e. tips for starting a young horse, preparing horses for trailriding, showing, etc).

A new and unrelated topic will be covered each week or two (i.e. first week, how to handle a horse that bucks, second week, dealing with buddy sour horses, etc)

One of the Team Members will post a specific topic to be discussed, and we'll want to hear some great solutions or directions on how to deal with each topic. I think we'd like to see a "common sense" approach, feeding off of the real life experiences of our members, not necessarily quoting the latest national clinician or magazine.

To help us better prepare, how about some feed back on topics you'd like to see covered in this project? Please respond by replying below.

I think that sounds like a great idea!

I can't think of any ideas of the top of my head but I know I'll have some as the warmer weather gets here and the fun begins

What a great idea. Being a newbie to horse ownership I always enjoy reading how you guys handle training issues and handling horses in general. Like the ground tie.

How to deal with horses that love to spook. This is the only one I can think of at the moment.

I would love to hear about training you should do with your foals,
And how about training through out the ages? What should your horse know each year from foal to 4!

I would like to see training to pick up feet and teaching basic ground manners.

I too think it is a great idea! How about maybe some folks would like to see a bit more on the actual breaking of a horse? And all that goes along with the different stages of breaking a horse(everything from groundwork and haltering and handling, to tacking and saddling up etc)! Any new ideas on any and all things in our horse training is awesome!

I second that one! In fact, I think we should start with that one...it should take us a month or two to cover all the details...

Training Suggestions

How about training to trailer? and my favourite............ conquering trail obstacles, crossing roads& highways, bridges, water crossings, railroad crossing , ascending and descending hills, encountering widlife, preventing wildlife encounters, riding with your dog, introducing new horses on trail rides, what to pack on a trail ride, trail riding during hunting season, desenstizing horses to gunfire, ( in case you are trail riding and encounter a nearby hunter) .

Yes I have questions and maybe some answers to trailering and trail riding. This is my M.O., I trailer to trail ride 3-4 times a week , so these are all things that interest me.

Great idea folks , keep up the good work!!

Comming soon to the training forum

It is starting to warm up to really get back into riding and i would like some ground work exercises or techneces on lunging before i start riding. I dont have a round pen. Is it best to use a long lung line or short? Length of time? Things like that.

Great Idea! I agree #1 should be training the owner or handler.

I'd also like more *tricks in my bag* for working with horses that sull-up in the middle of nowhere.

This next idea might be too controversial - but - what about teaching stall manners? i.e. Horse owns stall vs Owner owns stall. ( I get so tired of boarders bringing in horses who have the worst stall manners and would like ideas on how to handle the owners mainly.)

I'd love to see a topic on key points to cover on safetly introducing children to horses (both working on the ground and riding).

I'd also like to see something about breaking a horse from square one, or assuming from square one. I know that more than one person on this board has owned a horse with some major holes in it's training.

Maybe a not confusing "give to pressure discussion" too.

MARVELOUS IDEA!!!

Owner training would be a great spin-off for sure!

How to handle the over sensitive horse

In-hand lessons

ground driving and what can be learned from it.

I would live to see some discussions with well known trainers in various disciplines - either live or pm questions.

When I was a new horse owner--I always heard "You have to get their respect." That was soooooooooooo frustrating because noone ever told me HOW--- especially humane methods. It seems many horse owners have that same problem, so it would be nice to hear about respect building-bonding experiences you can do w/ your horse.

Coming soon to the training forum

Oh yes! Training the owner first would be at the head of things to do
Sounds like a good idea and should help many

ummm I'm new here and I don't want to overstep my bounds, but I have some videos of me starting a young horse on cattle, and a few on how to sit a stop, and get a young horse to back up, etc. I would be happy to share them.
