breaking my new horse

This will probably seem like a really stupid question, but I will ask it anyway. Is it possible to break a 17 year old saddlebred who has only been used as a brood mare? Hope to adopt her soon and would love to be able to break her but I am assuming she is too old. Any advice?

WELCOME TO HT FROM MONTANA...
not a stupid question...theres no such thing!! A horse is never to old to 'train' I like to call it training instead of 'breaking' ....I would rather have a trained horse than a broken one
I would def suggest you get a trainer onsite...as you may think she was only used as a broodmare...but she may have some bad habits and you may need a professional to help you out. Also, get a vet out to check her over...as she may have some lameness issues and that is possibly why she hasnt been trained yet.
Then you just start them out like they were 2 year olds...or weanlings...if it wasnt halterbroke yet IMO...I think the horse is def trainable

Thumbs up

I don't think that any horse is "too old to train". I have trained 4 horses by myself (working on my 5th), and they all turned out wonderfully. None of them were older horses though. I would start her out with groundwork in the roundpen, the same as I do with my younger ones. There are excellent books on horse training out there, along with videos (I have used books only, they are cheaper and have worked just perfectly for me). Just be careful should you decide to take this on. I don't think it would be difficult. Good luck!

welcome...and i agree with horselady.....training should be no issue, time and patience, definitly get a trainer to help you with the starting, i think you will be very suprised. keep us posted on her training, would love to know how she turns out.

I don't feel your horse is too old. She needs a solid foundation, like every horse does. Start at the beginning teaching her from the ground. CA has good DVDs that may help you with this.

i have never attempted training an older horse. but i have heard lots of people that have say that they are actually easier to break.cause their mind is mature.
