Here We Go Again...

Its the ongoing saga of Montana... No consistancy. My delema this time... RESPECT!

How can I get her to respect me? How can I show her I am the dominate mare, not her? It was getting kinda dangerous tonight because she kept trying to push me with her shoulder and she kept "spooking" into me, not caring that I was there. Is there a way to keep her from doing this? How do I switch the roles to become dominate without an ongoing fight? GRRR... Its just so frusterating!!!

Get a riding crop, if she barges into you give her a tap on the shoulder. Don't make a big deal of it, just when she starts to get to close, give a tap to remind her of where her feet are supposed to be.

Do you have a trainer that can work with you? If it is getting dangerous, then I would seek professional help.

Do what the lead mare in any herd would do, be aware that she is behind you and kick out backwards. Don't haul off and kick her in an agressive fashion, I;m talking about sort of in the way martial artists do it. When she enters your "bubble" kick out, she'll move

Clinton Anderson has some great training techniques. I have his book and it's great. The best thing is you don't have to have a round pen to do any of it. Sounds like she needs more than just a tap.

paso lover is right, treat her like your the lead mare and she better back up...she thinks she is bigger than you and you need to show her that is not so. in a herd, retaliation is quick, no nonsense allowed.

i agree, you have to show her who is the lead mare. However, i dont know your horse and i know that from personal experiences some horses can learn where their bubble and your bubble are from working with a shank or a tap with a crop whenever they start to move in

I have the same problem with Whiskey. He won't push anyone else around only me. He knows he is bigger than me, and I am just not aggresive enough with him. I am going to try these tips.

I like the technique Stacey Westfall uses where you use your elbow to teach your horse where your bubble is. You have your hand on your hip so the bubble stays the same size all the time so they aren't testing to see if it might be a little less this time. I'll even do it while I'm leading.

The other thing I do is walk my horse around on a lead and suddenly stop. I expect her to stop with me and I taught her to do that. While I'm standing I might also back up and she's supposed to back up also. If she doesn't back up I'll put my leg up like I'm going to kick back at her and once I did have to do it. Not hard and to her chest but a horse knows exactly what that means.

A method I had to use when I had a stud who broke my toe right after I got him because he was a space invader and stepped on it was to lead him around the arena always turning in unexpected directions so he had to pay attention to where I was all the time.

Rest in peace Clint, I'll always love you and I'll miss you for the rest of my life. You were and will always be my perfect horse.

*what everyone else said*
You also need to work on her getting out of your space...by this I mean walk towards her head and make her move away from you. When you lead her and you do a turn...turn her AWAY from you not with you/towards you. If that makes sense. This will gain her respect for your space. Do alot of lunging with her too.

i would put her in a round pen & really make her work until shes submissive. have her walk trot canter & change ways, always turning in towards you, you never want to see her bum [clinton anderson has a great video on this]

Just remember, it'll probably get a bit more ugly then stay like that for a day or two, before it gets better. She will test everyday to see if she can win. Make sure EVERY day is YOUR day.

Very good reminder for most everything. Don't start the "fight" if you can't finish it. And don't think things get fixed in one day.
