I like the technique Stacey Westfall uses where you use your elbow to teach your horse where your bubble is. You have your hand on your hip so the bubble stays the same size all the time so they aren't testing to see if it might be a little less this time. I'll even do it while I'm leading.
The other thing I do is walk my horse around on a lead and suddenly stop. I expect her to stop with me and I taught her to do that. While I'm standing I might also back up and she's supposed to back up also. If she doesn't back up I'll put my leg up like I'm going to kick back at her and once I did have to do it. Not hard and to her chest but a horse knows exactly what that means.
A method I had to use when I had a stud who broke my toe right after I got him because he was a space invader and stepped on it was to lead him around the arena always turning in unexpected directions so he had to pay attention to where I was all the time.

Rest in peace Clint, I'll always love you and I'll miss you for the rest of my life. You were and will always be my perfect horse.
