"A view from the top of the sierras...."

Here's another ride I posted on another board, It was done on Aug. 5, 2008. This is the post and ride pics that went with that one......A something a little different from my usual ride along with me story.......

Did a weekend campout on my own last weekend. Until I get pics up of it, gosh, I've got tons of rides I haven't been able to put up. Been doing as the Aussies say "a walkabout" around the sierras every weekend! Anyways...............here is a short clip of the terrains and one of the ridges I climbed to get to this view around the sierras. This was up on Hwy 108 out of Crabtree to Cooper Meadow did a cross country loop up a cow trail that would make deer cry with fear and to the top of the ridge to circle around it back down into Whitesides Meadow.......

And now for..................A view from the top of the sierras.......................

Oh, I am so jealous. That is absolutely stunning. I practically grew up in that area, me and dad spent the last 6 summers hiking by Kennedy Meadows. I miss going up there, I wish I had more time.

Aww, Josie looks so, so tired.

Like my mom said when she saw the video, " The look on Josie's face is like, here we go again, my crazy mom getting me up on these high ridgelines!" LOL!!!

Where bouts did you live up in this area? Would be fun to meet up and go up there so you can relive that area once again. Hwy 108 is all new to me. I'm used to Hwys 88 and 4. Those are my home bases, but I have fallen in love with the Emigrant Wilderness and am exploring more and more of it each year...

Oh, the Emigrant Wilderness is my favorite. Highway 4 is just gorgeous, and I LOVE Sonora. We went caping at Mosquito Lake, 3 summers ago and we spent a few days camping way up at the top of Sonora pass. I used to live in the Bay Area, but my dad and I spent every winter in Twain Heart/Strawberry, and up there on Sonora Pass.

I'm trying to plan a trip up there, I'm still trying to work out the details with my dad! It would be fun to get a few of us West Coast HT people together!

Nope, Josie gets shoes all year round. I use rims with a concave sole side, special made by my shoer, I thank him so much! The best tracking I have ever used in the mountains has been his shoes. Besides wandering the sierras she's also a full time ranch horse. We use the mares all winter long with the cattle, and the ranch is full of nasty rock. Never have problems with shoes, but they all have good strong feet too......

You two last poster, I had to giggle. Josie, well, she's one of those "one in a million" that "once in a lifetime" horse you've been looking for in your life. She and I have a bond that folks see when we ride, they just gaze in awe and ask, "how'd you get her like that?". I didn't get her like that, it's a trust that comes with horse and rider. She has saved my bacon many a times up there in those mountains. She knows if she can or can't do a climb.

I bought her as an unbroke 5 year old. Just climbed on her and took my time on her riding around, did routine ranch work off the back of her, never phased me to do something with her that she hadn't done, she just did it like she had done it before. She was raised in those mountains, she knows them like the back of her hoof. I get spoiled when working youngings, and take them to the mountains, as they aren't like Josie, she is my ole' reliable......

THANKS, your video is AWESOME.
I've never ridden in those kind of mountains, it's quite beautiful, and rugged. Since I live on the East coast, it's mighty FLAT here RB

Your video made me homesick and soon have to return. We lived in sthe Sierra Nevadas for several years in Greenville a very small town near Susanville. My dad was a gold miner in the back woods above Greenville we lived with the log cabin and the galvanized tub in the front yard and the spring that was so cold we dammed it up and made a refridgerator out of it oh and dont forget cooking with the wood burning stove and out house.

The pack station told me there is a place to camp with your trailer, about 6 trailers in a spot somewhere from the trailhead at Leavitt Meadows? Can you fill me in on that? Or where did you camp?
