You Are My Sunshine...

...my tired Sunshine!! We camped for the 4th of July weekend and went galloping and galloping the previous evening. She was pooped! She just starting to 'get' cantering under saddle this year really well.

Thanks for all the kind remarks! When I first started riding Sunshine almost two years ago, I was really intimidated by her height. We've reached some milestones together. It's been really fun (and scary/painful at times). She's the first untrained horse I've ever owned. I sent her to the trainer for 45 days and I've been riding her ever since. Last summer we did a tiny bit of cantering but only in short spurts, up hills and such. She'll always go good in a group of horses running.
While camping with some friends this weekend, we decided to go 'running' Saturday evening. A 16 yo girl who we just met came with us. She has a big QH gelding and she led our group of three. My other friend was riding an off-track Standardbred. Quite a trio: a Belgian, QH and Standardbred! lol Well, the only way I could keep Sunshine in a canter was to put her in the back or middle as I didn't have a crop with me. If she was in front she would go into a really fast trot that saddle horses have to run to keep up with.
So the girl on the QH starts out running and tells her horse 'GET IT' and his butt drops then they just GO! Sunshine was flat-out running/galloping to keep up with that horse! It felt like we were flying! She covers so much ground with each stride it's unbelievable! It was amazing but I didn't want to push her too hard so we only ran for about 20 minutes. It was w/t/c but mostly cantering. I could tell she was sore the next morning so we only did a really short trail ride at the walk then we packed up and went home. I'm so happy with her. She tries hard for me and I love her to death!

She is so adorable-her expression is priceless "I'm ready for my pillow and blankie momma" She sounds wonderful and it also sounds like you've come a long way together and it makes the bond even more special. The cantering sounds like fun although I am sure with her height can be intimidating and exhilirating at the same time.

awww, what a sweet good horse, she looks content and comfortable enough to relax. Love that collar? you are using instead of a halter. Looks like a great idea.

I was a little unsure about the collar on Sunshine. All my saddle horses have done really well with the neck collar vs. a halter BUT Sunshine is a puller/leaner/pusher (a draft thing?) so I was a bit worried. She pulled a little at first, but learned quickly that she couldn't go anywhere and had to respect the collar or choke. I like giving them a break from being in a halter. I swear, if Sunshine can picket on a collar, any horse can! She could take that entire line down, posts and all if she wanted! Honestly, it could have turned out to be the biggest mistake I ever made. Thank God it didn't!
