Trail Riding Kits

We tried to ride yesterday but it was so hot we gave up after about an hour, but before we gave up we had a chicago screw come out and the bridle fell apart. So a guy who was riding with us says I got something to fix that and pulled a piece of rope and an english stirrup leather with a safety stirrup on it out of his horn bags. Seeing a man who is close to 70 and I'm sure never sat in an english saddle pull out that leather and stirrup made me wonder what do most folks keep in their trail riding kits?

When we first started dating my wife bought me a set of insulated saddle bags with the cantle bag attached, so I keep a pretty good kit with me when we ride, although I admit I need to add a couple of chicago screws to the kit. If I had had some yesterday, that guy wouldn't have ended up riding home with a headstall made from clothesline and carrying his hundred dollar bridle.

So here is what I carry when I ride...

1) T.P.-never know when nature will call
2) ziplock bag-keeps T.P.,wallet and cell dry
3) pliers, screwdriver, rope, leather string( and now chicago screws )-this
will fix most tack good enough to get home.
4) Pocket knife-never leave home without it so might as well include it
5) Food (M.R.E.)-incase the worst happens and I stuck somewhere
6) Fire making material-(M.R.E. and T.P.)
7) Water

My wife carries a first aide kit but I'm thinking about adding one to my bag also. Altogether my trail riding kit wieghs less than 3 lbs so it's really not very heavy or bulky.

So what do you "never leave home without" and why ?

Hum this is a good thread. Very informative no doubt. I have learned to carry vet wrap and blood stop. Water and little packets of tissue. Hubby carries drinks and sandwhiches.

Sooooo

Water
food
vet wrap
blood stop
tissue
Ibuprophen
camera
extra reins
halters

For some reason we can never seem to remember the darn camera. I can't tell you how much time our digital has spent sitting in the truck seat while we ride our horses. No one thinks about it until we see something to take a picture of then it's like, oh yeah, it's on the truck seat.

We tend to ride with the halters on because what better place for them plus, right now I'm only riding in a halter because I still haven't gotten the new mare to take a bit. Blood stop- I hadn't thought of carrying but it's a good idea.

TP of course! A few napkins tucked in my pocket.....
Water bottle.

Ummm I guess packing is good but I never take anything! I guess I dont need it or never have...except the TP!! ALWAYS TAKE TP! I dont take food because usually I dont get hungry riding and if I do then I am very keen on what kind of wild foods you can eat. But I usually dont....I do take water if it is hot.
I never take any of my personal belongings such as wallet, phones, etc...I spray down with bug spray before I leave...I just dont like ANY luggage with me to have to worry about. Not even a SADDLE! lol just me though.....Packing is a good idea though.

I just am not into packing up to go ride horses...I just climb on and go and tough it out. I dont think I have ever wanted for anything while I was riding.....can wait till I get home....

There is ONE thing I usually do bring with me but I could NEVER tell!!!! And would never!

I started bringing that when my daughters mare had a puncture wound and we had to pressure wrap to stop it.

We pack food cause we are out on the trails 7 to 9 hours in a day without coming back to camp. My youngin would just asolutly die without food

More ideas-

Duct Tape- for that loose shoe
Diaper- for that barefoot horse than becomes lame/puncture (duct tape to secure)
Vet wrap/cotton
Halter/lead
Hoof pick
GPS
CellPhone
Orange Vest (if hunting season)
Water

You know you could carry the tack room and still not have what you need in the time of need.

Gotta look at weight also, too much weight on your horse will increase their fatigue.

I'm with cameo05-somedays we don't even see the trailer/campsite in the daylight. The main reason I pack the M.R.E. is because I just don't know what I'm gonna end up doing when I get on my horse ( although this is not as true as it used to be) I might take off for an hour long ride and come back tomorrow, it helps to know I can eat and have a camp fire.

I have no one to ride with I ride alone. Hubby isnt into it and doesnt want the kids riding so I just do solo trail riding. I do rides from a couple of hrs to around 6 hrs. I prefer to just not worry with packing when its just me.

But by all means yall....take your kiddies some FOOD

I used to go camping a lot so I learned it was very hard to keep TP clean and dry so... I always bring along a small paket of Baby Wipes!!! They make me feel cleaner out in the woods.

I think that knives are the best thing of all to take. There has been more than once that we needed it and didn't have it. It is scary not having one at a certain point.

Just an idea for the cell phone. Carry it with you and not on the horse. If you and the horse become separated, there goes your cell phone . Same with your GPS -- doesn't do you any good if you can locate the horse and not the rider.

When we rode Memorial Day weekend, I made sure I had all horsey type emergency items....

Electrolytes
Ichtammol
Vet Wrap
Hoof pick/knife
Gauze/Hoof padding
Corona Ointment

Actually, I can't even remember now what all I took, LoL. But I know I had one side of my saddle bag stuffed with horse emergency things.
