Great Ride Today

My mom and I went out to the Eufaula Dam to ride on the trails there. It was a little windy but nothing serious. It was my first offical trail ride with Ruby. She did wonderfully. She didn't spook at anything, even the four wheelers that are on the trails. Whatever I pointed her at she went through, up, over or down. The only problem I had out of her was she will not stand for mounting, someone has to hold her and if I wanted to stop to wait for mom to catch up (Ruby is gaited!! suprise suprise) she would sit back on her haunches and spin. But both are fixable and will be a work in progress.

Photos by a friend on a four wheeler.

Very nice pictures. Why are you surprised your horse is gaited? What kind of a horse do you think she is?

Her coggins says she is a qh. I have owned her for about a month and a half. When I first saw her I thought she was a morgan. But this was the first out in the open ride. I haven't been on her since I test rode her in a round pen. She has the headshake and smoothest ride. I suspected she might be watching her in the pasture runnin around but after riding I am sure of it.

While my friend was riding ahead to get pics of us Ruby kept trying to chase him. She can kept up with him without ever breaking into a canter. It was hilarious every time he looked back there we were. She did slow to a walk on cue to let him get ahead. That is the odd thing, from a trot, gait or canter she will slow with the slightest tug on the reins but getting her to stop from a walk is a battle.

Perhaps she was taught to stop from the seat rather than the reins. Try really sitting down in the saddle when you want to stop her. I tell people to focus on moving their bellybutton down and back towards the cantle and hunching their shoulders down when they want to stop. It looks really crazy and exagerated at first but once you learn to do it you can stop them without moving, it's really just shifting your weight.

Also, it's not that uncommon for a QH to be gaited, it's just not usually encouraged and a lot of them who can do it forget how. That doesn't say your horse is a QH, because to me it (the black one)looks like a TWH. It's feet are even trimmed like a walking horse. If you look at your photos look at how much more heel the black horse has and at the different angle on the hooves. Also notice the difference in the angle of the croup and hips and how close together her front legs are compared to the pally. All these things are definate signs of the breed.

You may notice that she'll ride smoother without that strap between her front legs. TWH's will actually paddle a little bit due to that strap. Their legs are so close together that that strap rubs them and can cause sores. Their is a gaited horse breast collar out there if you need one or you can even get one of those roping collars that don't go between their legs. Of course there are exceptions to everything and your horse could ride fine with that one and never have a problem.

My mare (the black one) was just trimmed about a month ago, she goes in today for shoes. My farrier felt that her hooves were good enough to go without shoes when I went to have them put on a month ago. Told me to ride her and if she got sore or seemed tender to bring her back for shoes. I did notice a slight difference in her when we hit small areas of gravel, but if she saw the gravel it was immediate brakes and a slow walk through them.
Does she look like a TWH? I was thinking she looked more like a morgan. But I am not overly familiar with either breed. Either way she is a sweet heart. Her gait in the pasture does resemble a twh or morgan. She has a really thick neck, if you grab her around the mane you can wiggle it easily. It feels like muscle though not fat.
The strap that connects to the cinch is removable on my breast collar. I used to own a twh mare and the strap did bother her. But she also loved to rear up with me, no one else just me. So I sold her to a friend that rode her all the time anyway.
