I guess maybe this should really be put in the venting forum

I am still pretty shaky and plain ol' madder than a no wed hen!
This afternoon the girls and I decided to take their pony and my gelding (who has only had approx. 30 days on him, mind you)out on the local trail that is basically a dirt road that is owned by a farmer to get into his fields and also leads to a small fishing hole. It's about 3 miles long and the locals use it for walking, bike riding, and horseback riding.
Well, it all started out fine, I guess. Scout, my gelding had a few bunny hops but nothing uncontrollable. The girls were having a good time enjoying their pony who is about as bombproof as they come.
We were on our way back when it all went bad. Some MORON came tearing down the trail in an old, LOUD pickup truck hauling a flatbad trailer with gate panels on it. You can imagine the ruckus it created. They were right on our hineys when I finally told the girls to find a spot to pull their pony over into and get off, so that they could pass. I was hoping they would do so SLOWLY, well of course not. They came barreling passed us bouncing the gates every which way and scaring the crap out of both mounts. I got my gelding under control but the pony took off through a field with the girls. The MORON kept speeding on as if he was chasing the pony. I screamed for him to stop and when I got up to him all H*** broke loose. My girls were both thrown from their pony at full speed and the pony never slowed down. She ran right across a highway and ended up getting caught up into her reins and skidded into the pavement. My daughters both have abrasions covering their backs, got the wind knocked out of them and Belle, the oldest of the two got a nasty bump on the left side of her forehead.
The pony was finally caught and is ok, though she did tear up her lip and is quite shaken.
The MORON never even stopped to see how my girls were or to offer to help catch the pony. He just kept telling me that he had a right to use the "road" too. AUGH! I don't care if he OWNED the road himself. When you see anyone on a horse, especially a child, you stop, and if you're going to pass, you do it slowly! This MORON saw the horses getting spooked and didn't think twice about it.
I am just sick about this. I think what bothers me the most is that the guy didn't even show an ounce of concern after seeing two little girls thrown off a horse at a complete deadrun, an incident he caused to begin with.
We have to keep an eye on Belle to make sure she doesn't have a concussion. Both girls are going to be so sore due to the abrasions and the bruising that is already taking place.
I know I was being a negligent parent by allowing them to ride without their helmets. Well, no more. Regardless of how short or easy a ride, they will be wearing their helmets! Shame on me, I know. It should not have taken something like this to make me see the importance of their helmets
