I've seen this old hackamore hanging around in the barn, and decided to try it out on Teddy to see how he went in it. I tacked him up as usual, then headed out the the arena to make sure he wouldn't react badly to it while I was on the trail. We went through our paces and he was perfect- he actually picked up his leads better than he usually does!
I decide to head out on the trail and, BOY- were the trails swamped! Mud, muck and water just
everywhere! Some of the trails had litterally been turned into little tributaries leading into the creek!
He crossed through the first tiny stream no problem, and when we got to the first gate he stood perfectly!

It was the most amazing thing! We continued on, and after we discovered that one stream entrance had been washed away- "
Great," I thought,
"we're going to have to take the secondary entrance."
The last time we had gone down the secondary stream crossing trail, I had had to dismount and walk him down the bank after his multiple refusals to cross. Sucking in a deep breath, I turn Teddy down the little branch-off trail, and was suprised to find two beautiful doe in the stream! Suprisingly, Teddy only flinched, then proceeded to
calmly walk down the bank!!

"OMG- has this hack given him the courage of a western horse?!?" I speculated as we continued up the other bank. The ground on the other side was dry, so we picked up a nice trot. There is a log on the trail, one he usually does some sort of flying leap to, but today he quietly jumped from the perfect distance without picking up speed on the other side!

(Which was very good because about four strides after the jump there was a mini-swamp).
We trotted around the bend in the path, then picked up- get this!- a
calm and collected canter!
When the dry parts of the trail ended, I sat down and he went smoothly into a walk without any running trot steps.
Teddy stood for the second gate perfectly (

), and we walked through the muck. We walked up to this little ditch that was filled with water- his usual thing is to jump it and then take off at a fast canter on the other side. When we jumped it this time though he only gave his little customary buck on the other side and then went back to a walk! This hackamore was working wonders!
When we got back onto the road (dirt, by the way), there was some pretty loud contruction going on- did Ted blink and eye? Well yes, he did blink, but he didn't spook.
Walking back home, I gave him his head and loosened his girth a hole, patted him and told him that he was a good boy. At the barn, I was about to dismount when I saw a wild turkey in the back yard! What a way to end a day!
And that, my dear friends, was the extremely long story of my magical hack! (Pun intended
