I went to the Ohio Equine Affaire this past April and Craig had an Extreme Cowboy Race there (albeit inside an arena). It was great fun to watch.I do have a long way to go though with my current horse. He's afraid of his own shadow some days....but we're making progress. The judged trail rides were a good starting point. I was able to get him desensitized to a lot of obstacles but in a slow and relaxed manner.

It's hard to tell approx how long (time wise) the race should be. I could do an actual circle course on my land which would keep it moving along if there are numerous entries. We could build permanent obstacles. If it was just a straight trail ride it would be about 3/4mi. long. Is that enough? We can set obstacles in such a way to lengthen the course. There is already a small pond about 2' deep and 20' across, a good riding road going up, or down a hill so I'm hoping that's a good start.

Slim, it's difficult to judge timewise how long the course should be as some riders will ride faster than others and some will take longer trying to complete obstacles.
Today's events went as follows: 1) retrieve mail from the mailbox, show judge, put mail back and shut the mailbox 2) there was a board on two barrels...rider is supposed to lift the end of one board, turn it 360 degrees and return the board to the barrel (this proved to be very difficult for many) 3) ride to the pond, go around the fence and through the water, then return to course 4) use a long poll to pick up pool rings from the ground and put them into a basket (5 rings) 5) back through a zig-zag maze 6) ride through a round bale ring on its side with streamers tied to it blowing in the wind ![]() 7) retrieve an egg from the chicken coop, ride back and give it to the judge (bonus if the egg was marked with an "x" 8) jump a small ditch 9) transfer a golf ball from one cone to another cone 9) (for open or adult riders) shoot a gun at a balloon 10) drag a log from one post to another 11) jump a jump made of railroad ties 12) cross a raised bridge with sides on it 13) dismount, blindfold your horse, lead it through the trash obstacle (plastic items to avoid injury), remove blindfold and put it back for next contestant 14) ground tie your horse, run around cones in one direction, then the opposite direction, lead your horse out of cones Done! PS...my daughter's horse spooked at the chicken coop and ran hell bent for leather back towards the farm house ...once she got her foot back in the stirrup she got her under contol.I'll post pics when I get a chance to download them and sort them. PROMISE!

Slim, this was in a large multi-acre field and the pond was across the road. Every judge did about 3 obstacles. There were generally 3 riders on the course at the same time but spaced out so that they didn't overlap. This only became a problem when one rider fell off and backed the next rider up.
They scored each obstacle on a range of 1-4. One being no problem and 4 if you did not complete it. Somehow they figured the scores and time both in the rankings but I'm not sure how they did that. Picking up the rings and putting them in the basket took the most time so they didn't start another rider until the current rider completed that obstacle. The horse blindfold was a bandana sewed onto a fly mask.

They did have a good time. In total there were almost 30 riders. It was a good day to hang out with other horse people.

We call events like this "Obstacle Challenges" down here. Alot of those obstacles I have done with my gelding. They are alot of fun and mind challenging for both horse/rider. They are a blast !!!!!!!!!!!
