New Saddle Care

Good news!! I just got a new Crates Dan Roeser Working Cowhorse saddle!
Bad news: not quite sure how to treat the leather. Here's the saddle:

http://www.cratesleather.com/pages/s.../reining.shtml

Its got a natural oil finish and is squeeky new. I prefer a darker shade but want to make sure I'm using the right products. I tested olive oil on the back cinch and it looks good. Is olive oil a good oil to use to darken and soften?
How about rain protection? I don't plan on riding in the rain, but might need to run from the barn to a covered arena. Thanks all. This saddle has to last me for the next 20 years!

Nice saddle, interested to hear responses on cleaning. I do not have any saddles that light in color.

Anyone? Just bumping up. I might take the plunge and use the olive oil today. Yes, no?

Thanks!

NO on the olive oil Purchase a good saddle product like Leather Therapy or Leather CPR. Also to get the squeek out, turn the saddle upside down and sprinkle powder or cornstarch down into the the skirts. It works wonders.

Thanks for the advice. I almost used the olive oil and I thought I would check HT just before I started on my saddle. Didn't use the olive oil but found some Lexol leather conditioner on the back shelf. Gave the saddle a light coat and it darkened to a nice chestnut color. I'll buy some Leather Therapy or Leather CPR for the future.
