Stupid Question

I have tried to figure this out on my own, but can't. Using 12 foot cattle panels, HOW MANY PANELS DO I NEED FOR A DECENT SIZED ROUND PEN TO DO GROUND WORK WITH MY MARES? Right now I have 7. Two of the panels have gates on them.

Are they 10ft. panels with 4 ft. gates or 12 ft. panels with 5 ft. gates?

Good working size for a moderate size horse 15.0 - 15.2 is (10) 12ft. panels with either a 4ft. or 5ft. gate. Hope that isn't to confusing.

What size do you mean when you say decent? 40', 50', 60'?
For a 40' round pen, it takes 10 12' panels, plus a 8' gate panel.
For a 50' round pen it takes 13 12' panels and an 8' gate panel. So 13 would likely do just fine.
For a 60' round pen, it takes 15 12' panels, plus an 8' gate, so you'd be fine with 15 panels.
Does that help?

Seer, my pannels are 12 feet with 4 foot gates. I just measured them. I will get more panels to make the round pen larger, but will it be ok to use both panels that have gates in the round pen? If I could use them I would put them across from each other, not next to each other. My mares are the size you mentioned or smaller.

Reining, I don't know what I mean when I say "decent". I want a pen that I can do ground work in and do some riding in. I haven't really ridden these girls in almost a year. We have been on several "short spins" around the neighbor hood, but they need work.

Cariboo remember that Harley is 14'2 and Patch is 15.2 or 3. Patch extends that neck like a giraffe. Ours is about 40ft and if you are going to do some riding I would go the 50ft if you have room.

Remember your walking sausage with legs (Harley) will almost die with work. Patch really really needs to learn to respect you.

That neck IS like a giraffe! I am definitely going to have to work with Patches. She's so sweet natured I have a hard time figuring out if she's not respecting me or just not getting it. My farrier told me she has me snowed. I think my hand throbbing will remind me I have to get the respect!
Harley ain't the only one who looks like a sausage. Me getting out and working with them will help all of us.

The one at our barn is 60', and it is a good size to ride in. I wouldn't want to canter in anything smaller. I say, the bigger the better! Easier on their joints and their balance. And, yes, you can use both panels that have gates, that will be fine.

I prefer a 60' round pen. You can do ground work and ride in it. It's less stressfull on their joints and such. And it's hard to lope in a smaller one. If you decide you need one smaller to work a particular horse, just take some panels and voila, smaller round pen.

Cariboo's riding will be a walk. She doesn't want to canter. I had her the first time ever, bring up a gallop with me beside of her on my mare encouraging her. She did well. Carri is right, if you are cantering the girls in the pen when you are not riding, it is better on their joints if it is bigger.

No issue with using gate panels as long as you secure them properly where they adjoin and make sure that the gates are closed properly.

Yep I just want to walk. Will go for the bigger pen and downsize it for working them. Tried a lunge line at Cameo's and after taking out a tree, realized I needed to work in a pen. Galloping is real thrilling, but I like to walk.

I found doing the ground work at all gaites and riding was best in a 60' round pen. Anything smaller was hard to canter in as others have said, plus I like some space between me and the horse when working them so if they do act silly, I'm not in the line of fire.

Just as a point of reference, I heard Clinton Anderson say that he uses a 50ft pen because it's big enough to work the horse, but it's not so big that he works himself to death trying to do ground work.
