Need advice on breast collar

When I took Blue camping this weekend we rode on a lot of hills, so I put a breast collar on him. It rubbed two spots on his chest, not bad, but it could have been if I hadn't noticed pretty quickly.

Can anyone tell me of a type of breast collar that I could use to prevent this?

What type of breast collar were you using? Did you have it too tight or something?

I have a breast collar on both my saddles and ride with them regardless of what I'm doing. I've never had a breast collar rub a horse, and I use 'normal' breast collars. So I'm not much help

I was using a breast collar that has neoprene on the inside. I don't think it was too tight, I could put my hand under it. It probably rubbed going up hills?

Check and make sure you can easily put two finger inbetween. After riding for awhile check it a second time as saddles will slip and fall into place on a horses back most of the time-hench making the collar tight. Also make sure your not needing something to hold it up, like if your horse has no withers, or very high withers.

Most breast collars will not cause irration if put on correctly. At lest I've never known one too. That could just be me though.

GOOD LUCK

EDIT - you could also try one of the breast collars that don't buckled to the cinch, the ones that just go from shoulder to shoulder?

It might have been any one thing or a combination of things that caused it to rub.

I always make sure my breast collars have a layer of smooth leather against the horse and that they're contoured or shaped to fit the horses shoulders better than a straight piece of leather. I never use felt or fleece breastcollars.

Or it could have been riding too low and blocking the horses shoulder movement. If it's not riding quite right across their shoulder it can rub at the point of the shoulder. If so take a leather strap or even a piece of scrap rope and attach it to the d-ring on one side where the tug strap attaches, run it over the horses neck in front of the saddle and tie it off to the d-ring on the other side. This way you can adjust how the breastcollar rides on their shoulders so it's not rubbing whenever they stride forward.

I have never had one rub like that. You can buy fleece "tubes" that fit over the three pieces where they make body contact, but it sounds like a fit issue to me.

Neoprene can make the skin quite hot where it touches the horse's chest, from the friction created by rubbing, like using an eraser on paper.

I can not use Neoprene on my horses it make them sore and my old mare goes nut like it is burning her. I use felt backed ones by Weaver. ON long trail ride with lots of hills some times leather will rub even when they are fitted right. Some horses have thin or lite skin like my old mare and fleece or felt is the best --if you go though tall weed the fleece get a lot of seeds and stuff in it .

Can I ask where the rubs are and how old and what breed is the horse. Younger horses and gaited horses tend to have less room between there front legs than fully matured quarter horses and therefor the strap that connects to the cinch will cause irritation to them. That strap can also cause the chest strap to rub more than normal and cause sores on the chest ( because their legs tug on the strap that goes to the cinch with each step and that causes more than normal movement of the chest strap). I think that either using a breast collar that doesn't attach to the cinch or using a wither strap on a "typical" breast collar should solve your problem. I would also suggest that you don't use neoprene where it will touch the horses skin. A lot of people that I ride with are discovering the same thing I did last year and that is that neoprene causes severe hot spots especially the neoprene bottom ( tacky too) saddle pads.
