As some of you know, we bought my dreamhorse Rosie in February. I did not have much history at all on her, except that the previous owners rode her in a tom thumb, and our test ride was in a hackamore. My goal was to find a bit that Rosie not only was responsive in, but that she liked and was comfortable in. I have tried a little S hack, a bosal, a tom thumb, an argentine bit, a snaffle, a curb (grazing) bit, and about four other bits that were all different and I don't know the names of them. In everything I rode Rosie in, she was responsive - some bits more than others. But in some bits she would toss her head while riding and with each bit she would "worry" at the bit constantly. And of course you have to ride in each bit for awhile to see if its just the "new" feel, or if she really won't settle down and relax. Alot of people told me to just pick one bit and stick with it and that she would eventually get used to it - but that wasn't what I wanted for my girl. I wanted a bit that she honestly liked and was able to relax in.
Well, after all these months and effort, I finally found the one - she is so responsive and light that its wonderful and she has quit playing constantly with it and no more head tossing. I can even tell she is enjoying our rides more - she has always had alot of "go" but now she has even more - but she is more relaxed too and I can tell she is really enjoying herself. Here is the bit that Rosie picked for herself:
