Hmm. It almost looks like it would allow more motion in the leg, but I worry that it would pinch the inner thigh.

My Martin Barrel saddle was rigged like that. I loved it! It really seemed to help the saddle hug to the horse without being overly tight. I never noticed any added bulk under my leg from it. If anything much less bulk that with your average inskirt rigging.

The only problem I had with it was finding a short enough girth to fit my mare. She's 14'3" and I had to use a 26" girth which was barely short enough, she would have been better with a 24" but I've never seen a good quality girth that size. On a larger horse the girth wasn't an issue.

Naw, I sold the saddle. Man, I loved that saddle though but no real reason to keep such a fancy saddle just to sit and watch tv in. MissKitty has informed me that she does not like arena work anymore.

Thanks though.

That is very odd, Looks like it would pinch your inner leg.

It does not look like it is in the ride spot to chafe your thigh-besides you are supposed to be setting on your pockets-not slouched forward on your leg
I am going to find one and test drive it

Not for me, I'd get pinched for sure. It looks like someone's come up with a new "design" to sell in a sluggish market. Didn't Billy Cook get into trouble for supposedly hiring illegal immigrants? Didn't the plant shut down?

Yuch, I don't like that at all. First, the pinch factor for your leg. Then, I don't like that the rigging isn't part of the main skirt of the saddle. I have a TexTan Hereford that has dropped rigging from the main skirt. Nice because then you don't have the bulk right under your leg. But having the cinch rigging on the outer skirt doesn't seem like it would hold up well to me.

My gaited saddle is rigged this way. Love it & haven't had any problem with it pinching my leg.

kinda reminds me of how my aussie saddle was rigged, I was concerned when I first got it that it would pinch my inner thighs but alas it didn't, this one may not pinch just gotta try it out.

I get the point of it being smoother and your lower thigh (or atleast on me because I'm short) would be closer to the horse since there is not another layer of leather there. But really I don't care for it at all. I would worry about the wear on the stirrup leathers where it would rub the edge of the hole. Also I don't think there would be alot of forward or rearward movement from the fenders as it would catch either the front or back of that hole. If the fender can't move feely it will bend instead of laying flat to accomodate the movement of the rider. I'm just not a fan of Billy Cook saddles, not the new ones anyway. The older ones from 20 or so years ago are OK. I bought a new BC cutting saddle a few years ago and sold it as soon as I could. The Longhorns have a lower resale value too. For a good close contact seat we prefer a GOOD cutting saddle. Some brands are good, some are not. The older ones are much, much better (and already broke in) unless you get into the really high end new ones. The trees are specially made to hug the horse and not leave dry or sore spots. The trees are a little thinner (but still just as strong) so you sit closer to the horse to begin with, then add the cut outs underneath the fenders and you get a very close and confortable ride without bulk.

Let us know what you think after trying it.

If you look closely that saddle is made in Greenville, TX which is actually Longhorn not BILLY COOK

Longhorn is a line of BC saddles. There are the old Greenville BC saddles, then there are the newer Longhorn BC made in Greenville. Same place, same maker, but definitely two different saddles.

BC sold some fo his designs to longhorn at one point when he got busted and sold the greenville saddles to longhorn ... IMO the OK Billy Cook's are much better then the NEW Greenville saddles I have seen a few of the OLD Greenvilles and they are great but the new ones seem to be a lower quality saddle

I agree. When I say old BC, I mean 20 (or more) years ago. An original BC saddle, not the newer cheaper ones that have a name but no quality. Whether it says Billy Cook or Longhorn the quality is just not the same. The tack dealers tell me they come from the same place, they just have a different tag. One says Longhorn and one doesn't. The Longhorns are the (slightly) cheaper version.

Yep-I saw that right off. It made no difference to me.
I have no issue with the LONGHORN Billy Cooks at all. They are not "inferior' at all. Longhorn saddlery has been around a very long time.
BC sold out/sold his name-to be used quite legally and moved to OK.
Where he was busted in 2006,may have been 2007 for having over 60 illegal aliens at his factory.
Quality is where you find it.

Ok, I know this thread is getting old but I just found out some information that is pertinant and I thought I would share. Apparently this is called In Seat Rigging and was patented in the late 1920s to early 1930s. From what I've read it is popular in ranch rodeos and in the southwestern U.S. I was told that this type of rigging gives a more secure and even cinch because it uses the whole seat to hold the saddle in place. It also is supposed to give more feel than flat plate rigging as it creates less bulk between the leg and the horse. The only drawbacks I've heard of with this rigging is if the slot for the stirrup is not cut properly then there tends to be restricted leg movement and even some pinching.

Hope this info helps.
David

ETA: I know it's hard to see but if you look close at the picture the rigging rings for this saddle are actually made into the leather of the seat Jockey. ( It's just barely covered by the stirrup but if you look close you can tell where it's at)

Thanks David-that is what I was thinking-it would be really "snugged down" on the horse.

Wow, I would love to have that saddle! That looks really comfy to ride in. And it's a gorgeous old ranch saddle.

Tovero, I'm with you...I wanna test drive one!
