New type of bridle

Hard to believe, but this contraption is actually legal for dressage, and has been officially declared so by the FEI, the international equestrian sport governing body. I got this picture from their web site. There is no explanation given - just the note that this is now legal as a snaffle bridle in dressage.

Now, I've been around horses and tack for 38 of my 41 years, and thought I had a good grip on the reasoning behind the tack we use - but the logic behing this thing escapes me.

Anyone who can logically explain the purpose behind this strange design, gets a cookie

That is odd, I have never seen one before... It looks like it is a super-duper crank noseband or something.

I wish they would make a bitless bridle legal, Miley does much better in one. I know, you can't get the same collection, but just keeping her in the arena is our goal right now!

Does it double as a halter? It would just appear to make the noseband more stable, although I don't see why that would matter...

DUH well, just send those cookies over...................can you not see it

It is a contraption solely designed by someone who was spying on the throat lash thread, look see, no argument about it being to tight there

hmm. from the top down it looked like a handy cavesson/bridle combo but the strap under the bit thing is kind of strange. do i get cookie crumbs for my uninformed yet useless opinion?

GreyDot- You are torturing me with this! Ugh! I can't believe I can't remember where I saw that!

I know what I was looking for when I stumbled across it, and that's making it more difficult. Remember that NS bit you showed me? I went hunting down anyone who sold those bits (to try and find one for less in the states). The problem is that I went on so many different sites that day, I can't remember where I saw it.

Ooh, wait. I think I Googled : eggbutt low port. Hmm, maybe a starting point. Well, I guess I know what I'll be doing for the next half hour.

ETA: I'll be in Conyers, GA. next weekend. That's only a couple hours drive to pick up my cookie after I figure it out.

I wonder if the strap under the bit is to help keep the bit in place? Looks more like a halter/bridle combo to me.

The strap under the bit is pretty "standard" equipment, it is called a flash noseband. It keeps the horse from being able to open it's mouth to evade the bit. We use one on Miley, because she LOVES to run around with her mouth gaping open so the bit is completely ineffective. And with my 7 yr old baby on her, that is just not acceptable!

No, not the flash. Look where the throatlatch should be. See that weird buckle? That's what were talking about.

Yep, I got that, but several people were commenting on the strap UNDER the bit, also... I thought I would explain it, because for a long time, I did not know what a flash noseband was used for.

I've got it!!!!! It's nothing more than a conversation starter. Now, where's my cookie? (arms folded and impatiently tapping foot on the floor)

I know very little about the nuances of english bridles, but looking at it it looks like it would be extremely difficult for the horse to get any jaw movement. No only because of the flash and caveson, but because of the throatloatch being so low and snug. The buckles just look like the buckle adjumstments on a leather show halter to me...the super adjustable ones.

I wonder if also it keeps the throatlatch from getting in the way of a super-collected horse?

I don't know just guessing

Could the throatlatch be that way to prevent it from interfering with the horse coming down on the bit?
I am clueless too, but it is my best guess...

That is pretty normal for dressage....the piece below the bit is the flash ( used for keeping the horses mouth closed around the bit). It's okay and won't bother them if it's not strapped down super tight.
