Barrel Racing Bit Suggestions

Whats a good bit for an experienced rider with a light hand and a very broke horse w/ power sterring and power brakes ? Do not want anything harsh. No tie down on the horse. If you could send me a link of what the bit looks like, I would appreciate it.

Oh girl!

I would def recommend the 'million dollar bit' by martha josey. It is amazing for a trainee' to a soildly broke barrel horse. Try it once and you'll fall in love, and as long as you have easy hands so will your horse. Although it doesn't have alot of 'whoa' unless you tighten the chained crub.

I like a Wonderbit. They come with twisted wire and just plain snaffle mouth. I use the plain snaffle mouth, I don't need the oomph of the twisted wire.

I run my boy in a copper rolled D-ring snaffle .. mostly because he listens and the other reason was when I bought he flipped out whenever a bit with any shank at all was put on. So I had to settle for a snaffle. Not the tightest turner, but we're not competing for big $$.

WoW! I was just thinking the same thing. That's what I used on my old paint horse. All I had to do on him was sit back and say hup and he was in my lap. I could ride him in a rope halter but they wouldn't let me. I liked the million dollar on him because of the mullen mouth so I couldn't over cue him and turn him into the barrel, he was a tight wrapping horse on his own.

Otherwise I've always liked something simple like an H-gag or a sweet six. Or if he's really light just a plain half moon snaffle gag in your choice of mouthpieces. Never been a fan really of combo bits, never seems like the hack rope fits like it should but I've seen that Reinsman has come out with two bits that have adjustable leather nosebands.

I like Wonder bits too. I prefer the smooth mouth type because my horse doesn't need twisted wire. I also have a half moon gag that I use. I'll try to find a camera & get a pic.

I have used the wonder gag on a few of my horses and have had nothing but great experiences with it.

The Junior Cowhorse (not cowboy) bits are a gag style and can be great bits, but watch that they don't have a middle piece that is almost ball shaped. Very uncomfortable for your horse.

Dang, I had a MJ million dollar bit. Might be able to get it back for you. I kinda think it might be too harsh if its for the show next weekend for Chum. I would loooove to ride barrels on Jack. He would beat em all at ducking out of the first and me falling on my butt since he is extremely fast

Here is a link with the Jr Cowhorse. Im too lazy to download to PB

I had a dogbone Jr. Cowhorse that I tried on two different horses. Neither one really liked it. It seemed to pinch them between the mouthpiece and the top part of the shank. Which of course pissed them off and made them throw their front end around when ever I'd pick up on a rein.

Sold it and went back to the old standby Half moon gag or H-gag.
