Horse Trailer - Is this a good deal?

I'd love to have a horse trailer and have been looking at used older trailers at around $1000 but this ad caught my eye. What do you think ... Is this a good deal?

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/grd/789963465.html

I also was considering this one .... a little older but looks good for its age.

How odd that first trailer-which is worth a lot more than 2900 bucks..is also listed here in Texas. It may be too good to be true..may be a scam

The first trailer I bet is a scam.. I've been looking for a different trailer and have found many scams. If you contact the first person tell them you want to see it in person. I just went through that I once I said that I wanted to see the trailer in person they wouldn't respond anymore. Also, make sure that the title is clear.

I agree, the first trailer could be a scam.

I don't like the 2nd trailer, looks small and it looks like the rust is ready to break thru across the front.

I bought a two horse trailer just like that second one and my husband and I painted it our self and it turned out great almost looked new!!! I say go for the second on. Unless the first ISN"T a scam and then JUMP on it.

I'll show you how nice those older trailers can look with just a little paint.

Before Shot

After shot

What I saying don't pass up an old trailer because it's not super pretty. As long are the structure is safe and everything mostly superfical rust you can easily prime and repaint it for VERY little.

WE just sold our 2 horse bp like the second one you posted for 400 bucks...

There is alot cheaper ones still in good condition if you look around. I like it, but I wouldn't pay over 5-700 for one. JMO

Thanks it really was VERY easy. We got tracter primer and then a GOOD quality tracter/ truck paint and put one coat of primer and two coats of paint. It only took one can of primer and two cans of paint. We just used good quality rollers and paint brushes.

The ad for the first trailer is the exact same one on Craigslist in Des Moines, IA.

http://desmoines.craigslist.org/grd/790145312.html

Hmmmm. That is one great deal that is floating around all over the U.S.

I almost jumped on it myself until I saw your post today.

Did the trailer have any surface rust on it? MIne has surface rust, so i htink i need to first sand the whole thing down, then do the primer, then paint. Any ideas on the best, easiest, and cheapest way to do it???

The guy that told us how to so it said to take an sos pad the metal type pad and sand off the big chunks but once you get those off and there is no more flaking rust than you can prime over the other stuff and you may need two coats of primer with alot of rust then paint as normal at least two coats!!

I used a normal wall roller on the really big parts the REALLY good quality so NO lint would roll off and the kind for smooth walls very low pill roller. Then the brushes were VERY good hair brushes so they wouldn't leave any lines!!!

Have you seen any of these?

I don't need one, but always look at the local ads.

That looks really great! I had an older trailer that I repainted a couple of times, but it never did look as good as that! (I'm lazy about masking! ) Another good tip though, there's this stuff called naval jelly that you can get from an auto parts store that kills the rust. When I painted my trailer, I sanded it and then painted it with the naval jelly to keep the rust from coming through again. It also came in handy for the tight areas that weren't easy to sand well.
Valerie, the 2nd trailer you posted (the real one!) might not be that bad of a deal--I've always considered WW a good brand. It doesn't seem overpriced to me, but then again, I'm in California so I might just be used to everything being overpriced!
Good luck with your shopping!!

I'd have the bearings checked as replacing them can add considerably to the cost of the trailer. Horse trailers spend a lot of time just parked. We all know about parking a vehicle too long without taking it for a run-same with horse trailers.

Thanks guys .. I should have realized that was one of those "too good to be true" ads. I hate scammers.

I'm in no big hurry so I'll just sit back and browse the ads till the right deal comes along. I need to save up a few more $$ anyway ... I like to pay cash for everything and our new pasture/barn project has strapped us pretty good the last few months.
