It is like a halter, but it has rings on the noseband so that you can attach the longeline to it. It is also more padded than a halter.

A longeing cavesson is like a cross between a snugly-fitted halter and a bridle. It usually has metal plates across the nose, which help keep it from twisting around the face. Normally, it will have three rings on the nose, and sometimes another one on each side, where the bit rings would normally be on a horse. Many also have rings where the browband joins the headstall.

A cavesson is used for proper longeing, and is the first introduction to side-reins and a longeing surcingle. When first introducing it, use it by itself. Put it on so that it fits like a bridle, but do all the straps snugly. You'll notice that in addition to the 'cavesson' strap, there is also a 'throatlatch' strap, and one between those, too. Those all need to be done up snugly, but NOT tightly. They should not pinch the skin, but you should not be able to fit any more than a finger between them and the skin. The longe line goes on the CENTRAL ring on the nose. If you are using side reins, they go on either side of that central ring - or on lower rings, if you have those.

A horse should not, really, ever be longed in a halter, because those tend to twist around the face - and that's why people resort to tricks like running the longe line up and over the poll, or over the nose. None of those are comfortable for the horse. The proper, safe, useful way to longe is in a cavesson.

Hope that explains!

The lunge cavesson teaches the horse to move in an arc, to round and soften the body. Attach your lunge to the center ring on the noseband and it will help prevent a resistant jaw.

Is this also what's called an "elbow pull"?

I asked my riding instructor for help in getting LH more collected. She's going to bring an elbow pull to our next lesson tomorrow.

An elbow pull is also known as a bungee, that you put over the horses poll, through the bit and attatch under the saddle.

I like my lunging caveson, but I use a $2.00 attatchment for lounging with a bit more then that.
