Please don't be shy folks, it would be great to hear from others with 'better than average' figures, with good and bad reports of were you get your riding gear.

I could do with finding some warm weather gear, thats light weight.

Alrighty...
my personal problem is 19 inch calf circumference even when I am skinny I have these monster thick legs. I am looking at half chaps and even those don't go up that big. I found some "riding style" boots that will work, some clever person makes wide calf boots so I must not be the only one...but as these are not equestrian boot per se, I figure they will not last all that long..but I can live with that but, I am worried as they have a zipper on the horse side of the boot, not up the back, do you think it would work?

oh and Kerrits XL is a size 16/18

If you have deep pockets Hobby Horse has plus size show clothes. They usually have a sale in February too. They are on-line too.

Not only the deep pockets but be careful on proportions on Hobby Horse, I know alot of plus sizes that dont like the fit on some of their stuff.
I like 1849 Ranchwear and FTWW. Those fit me better and were cheaper.

I have a pair of xxwide tall boots. I am 6' tall and 180#'s. I have an 17 1/2 inch calf!!!!! I had a rant in the store when the only boots they had I would have had to go up two foot sizes and even then have them stretched. I lucked out and found mine (discontinued now) on ebay.

It's a racket, I'm convinced. But to answer your question a side zipper will tear up your saddle and be very uncomfortable I'd think.

I found a perfect pair of half chaps at www.prochaps.com... where you can order not only the circumference but the height of the chaps as well....excellent for us vertically challenged. They are very well made, and paired with paddock boots look great.. Check out the winter polartec breeches at www.tropicalrider.com... they offer a wide variety of sizes, and I ordered mine with the knee patch positioned correctly for my short legs....and they are cozy warm...Good luck with your search.

Ha at least you have calfs, I have cows, mine are too big to be calfs!
Mine are 18 3/4 and 19, guess which one is bigger? The LEFT! I know I prefer to shop at 1824 but I heard they went out of business.

I have the chaps Kathy V was talking about, I love them. It is great that you can get them in exactly whatever size you need. For English show clothes, I was able to order them online from Dover Saddlery, and they are great. They are much less expensive than going into a tack store, too.
For me, the worst thing about being a "fluffy" rider is that when you go into a tack store, they pull out the biggest thing they have, which will fit on ONE of my thighs, and then look at you like you are a leper when it doesn't fit.

Beezwing, if the top of the boot is in the wrong place it will rub your legs raw, plus the bump created by the zipper. Why not talk to a saddle maker or shoe repairer about putting a gusset in a set of half chaps? If you get a good set you probably wouldn't have any problem selling them if you give up the sport.

I am thick around the middle, but dont have a big tush or legs, so I bought mens wrangler jeans. I also found a mens shirt. I find the plus size stuff for women to be huge in the rear and huge in the chest which I have neither of

I would love to find a nice vest or something. I love the slinky shirts, but I would look like a sausage

Hobby Horse has a sale I will have to go visit their website

I don't know a lot about show clothes, but I am in love with the Aura jeans by Wrangler. I am a 12 in other jeans and a 10 in theirs. I know they did that on purpose but I like it, and they fit me well. I have a bigger butt, wide hips, and large thighs

Sigh, that is about what I thought about the boots. I will be back looking at half chaps and paddock boots, thanks for the leads. Ariat pro babies will just look too funny with a dressage saddle and they don't come up quite high enough to protect me from the leathers.

Why do they not make decent exercise/sporting clothes in the sizes that people who need to exercise need?

Some of us, even fit, will be larger sizes..I have wide hips and short limbs and with any exercise at all become muscular, thank my irish peasant genetics, I look at a pair of size 8's and just giggle...even under my fluff that just won't work.

Next question...has anyone taken regular exercise pants and sewn on knee patches?

I haven't done that, but I have often ridden in those with half chaps and do fine... Target now has some pants for little girls with the knee patches to look like riding pants, they are so cute!

For boots - if you can find field boots (or whatever style you like) that fit your feet, but not your calves, I took mine to the shoe shop and he put in an elastic gusset on the inside. He split the boot down the seam and added in heavy duty elastic gussets - works great!

Also, check out Just My Size (online or catalog) for "leggings". I use their stretch leggings for exercise/pleasure riding. They have a brand (Champion I think) that doesn't have any inside seams too. They sometimes have stirrup pants that I use to school with. They're faily inexpensive - under $20 so you can buy several pairs and don't worry about the leg patch.
