stock trailer v. closed trailer

What do you guys think?

I'm in the market for one, not sure which to be looking for.

Primarily for short distances, as of now just one horse will be in, but would like to be able to fit two.

He is about 15'2-3 and 1100 lbs.

I was told a stock trailer may be better for him since he'll have more room, and they're cheaper and better ventilation. But I know nothing about trailier.

So of course I came to the experts

Another consideration will be height. We just sold our 2 horse stock that was extra tall, and got a 3 horse stock without considering the height issue. Of course the horses have adjusted to less head room, but wish we had thought about it before we sold the old one and bought the replacement

I currently use a stock trailer and its great for day shows....but overnight shows you would probably want something closed in

I think it depends. For summer or warmer weather, it's nice for a stock trailer, which is what we have. In the winter months, it can get pretty cold. I prefer stock, because I think it's more roomy for the horses. But it's really opinion.

You can have the best of both I have an aluminum trailer with drop down windows in front and stock side on the butt (also have plexi-glass to insert into slated sides to totally close it in for winter). The other thing that you will really find nice is having a dressing/tack room. It's so nice to be able to keep your stuff in there and not have to worry about it - I keep one set of brushes in there so I never have to worry about bringing them. Plus I keep all my show tack in there so it's ready when I am.

Mine is 6'6" tall and fits my 16.3 QH just fine.

I have a cornpro 2 horse stock slant. I put plexiglass slats in that can be slide open or closed.

That one looks pretty good especially for the bid price when I looked. Be extremely careful when buying something like that over Ebay though.
If you're looking for cheaper then I'd agree that getting a trailer you can put Plexiglass inserts in would be the best idea. That way in the summer it's open and in cold weather you can enclose it. It's not that expensive (at least here) and I know our service guy here can do them pretty quickly once he has the measurements.
If you're able to spend a little more $$$ then I'd advise getting a horse trailer that has the roof vents and drop down or slide windows. They're sooooo nice.

GOOD LUCK SHOPPING!!

I would be very hesitant top buy a trailer off of Ebay unless its close enough for you to go look at it prior to the end of auction.
Too many times I've seen the scammers using Ebay to sell horse trailers then they contact anyone involved with the listing whether you asked a question or bid after the auction ended w/a second chance offer claiming the original auction winner failed to pay.

I too think it depends on where you are and what you plan to do. If you're showing a lot, or you're in an area where it rain or is cold you probably want a closed in trailer. If you just want something for going to trail rides or smaller shows and it's hot where you are you want an open trailer.

I bought a full enclosed trailer a few years ago and boy mine got real hot even on mild days. It was just too hot for our climate unless it was very cold outside. I would have had to have had an AC put in to make them comfortable. I sold it, made a profit and would like to find a simple, open trailer. I can always blanket when they are cold. But if I were showing a lot I would look for something more enclosed. I did haul a horse once in the rain in a semi enclosed trailer (all closed up but a small opening in the back) and by the time we got there the mare was drenched and she had a waterproof blanket on. I was lucky she didn't get sick.

I'd be a little wary of the fact that the ad says the trailer has some rust. The bad thing about ebay is you can't check out the product before you buy it. I'd recommend looking at trailers in your area that you can check the bottom of..make sure there's no rust or wood rot there.

I'm in the same boat as you. My concerns with a steel trailer is the rust, I also worry about wood floors. I personally prefer the enclosed trailers, but I do like the option of the plexi on the butt side. Summer time it makes it much more comfortable.

Thanks all.

That trailier is two hours away, close enough to see before buying, but not in two days notice.

As of now the big is up to closer to 1000.

I am not doing any showing at the moment.

Here is my situation:

I have my horses in the backyard, and have no riding ring. There is one around the block and one at a neighbors down the road. Close enough to ride to, but Lestat is only 4 and not experianced enough to go alone so I would like to have a trailer to get him there in.

Nothing fancy, don't plan on keeping my tack in it. Just something safe and reliable.

I know I will find the right one, but of course I want it NOW!

I have a 16 foot stock trailer. (bumper pull) I've had it 20 years and painted it 4 times. I would NEVER go back to a 2 horse stock trailer. Mine looks just like the one in the picture, but it is a 16 foot. It pulls just like the short one, but you have WAY more room in it. I can put saddles and everything in the front and still haul 2 good size or even 3 if they are small horses in it. They always load and can turn around if they don't back. You can put plexiglass in the slats for winter, or open it up for summer. I can put a bed in the front if I want to for over night. We even had a plastic bathtub in the back one camping week. ( we were way out there) It was nice to cool off in the evening. We can also haul rider lawn mowers to the repair shop if need be, and haul 67 bales of hay.

I would say stock trailer b/c...it is more versitile. You can use it to haul big stuff too (furniture, wood, etc). I had a stock trailer and we got more out of it than the horses !! Loved it. To this day, I regret trading it in on my current 2H with DR. But I love my new trailer too !! Go stock. That one on ebay you showed is cute, but I would be weary also, remember your 'babies' are in that and it needs to be safe. I would try to go to a dealer, they have used trailers and you know they have been inspected for safety.

Definitely stock! I've owned a one-horse straight load, a 2-horse straight load, and my 12x6 stock. It's so versatile! I've opened it up completely to move furniture, it fits 2 horses easily, and you can squish 3 SMALL horses in it for short trips. I love how well ventilated it is, and Kniggit loves watching out the side as we travel.

You can always get removable dividers and plexiglass rails to set it up however you want.
