My horse's sheet has only helped him. He seems more comfortable with it on when its colder, especially if its raining. If I feel under the sheet he's always toasty warm! I do understand the arguement about smashing down hairs, but my boy doesn't really have many hairs to smash down , his winter coat isn't much longer than his summer coat, and his summer coat resembles a show coat . He does get cold if I don't keep a sheet on him in the 40's. He doesn't shiver but will put his butt to the wind and just stand there with his head bowed.

Being in the heart of the Canadian prairie to say our winters are harsh and cold is an understatement!! We don't blanket our filly. She is running with a herd of ponies and they have shelter in the corals and trees. She looked like a buffalo last winter, it was pretty funny. Our horses at the barn are different, their turn out pens have very little shelter so we will blanket them when it is cold or windy. We like ours to have a good coat going though so will not blanket until they grow some fuzz. The other day we had wet snow and mine wasn't blanketed. She was just as warm as the others. It wasn't really cold but some of them didn't have water proof blankets, which has to be way worse than just being out without one. We had a big change in the weather here, going from really warm to below freezing, we did blanket them then because it was a shock to the system.

He'd be in the barn with his buddies all warm, so I hope he's ok

I basically do the same..Mine have free run of thier stalls. I do stall them in the colder rainy times. I only put blankets on if the temps get into the teens or low 20's. I have done this for years and I have never had a sick horse from it. I try to let them be horses....

we don't our horses, they usually have plenty of coat to combat cold. I have blanketed my TB as he didn't seem to grow much of a winter coat when I first got him.
