Our scuba wet suits were made of neoprene and I can vouch that it did not breathe. It is full of little air bubbles which gave it insulating properties. Standing in the sun the suit became hot as blazes and I started losing fluids out my pantlegs at an alarming rate. From that experience no one can convince me to use a pad with neoprene in it.

Sorry, neoprene in itself is not breathable. Though some pads that claim they are breathable are really more of a weave type fabric that tends to pull out hair and rub horses.

Looks like the "breathable" quality is from it being woven or waffled. I have an impact gel pad that I swear by and it has the waffled neoprene on the bottom. I have a girthy horse and he is not nearly as bad with the impact gel.

Doesn't the saddle and rider's weight just squash those holes closed, or flatten out the waffles?

It depends on the pad. The good ones have more to them than just waffled neoprene. Most are a thick neoprene with a thin layer of tacky on the underside to allow air flow. Mine has the a 1/4" layer of padding on top, the gel inserts in the middle, a 1/2 inch layer on bottom, then the tacky neoprene waffle on the very bottom. The tacky allows air flow and helps the pad grip the back. I have not had any issues with hair pulling or rubbing.

Very easy to keep clean too.

I bought an air ride pad a year ago and it has already worn out (no neoprene involved). My gel pad is over 2 years old and is still going strong.
