Someone been spraying pepper spray in the horse barns?

If it is true and confirmed by the second test, that is terrible..

I wonder if someone was trying to improve their own chances of winning? It's odd that three relatively high placing horses and one mediocre (for the Olympics) horse would end up with this stuff on them. Oh well, I hope that the truth comes out and the proper people get punished. At least this will take the focus off TWHs for a day or two right.

Somehow this doesnt surprise me....people are getting more and more creative with what to give their horses to make them "work harder" before a competition....i have seen some of the dirtiest of the dirt in the NBHA world.....try LAXATIVES and NO water before a run....the horses become dehydrated hence making them "work harder"....this i have heard that a VERY well known trainer has done.....but i wont mention names, simply to protect myself. When horses start dropping dead maybe they will start cracking down on drug tests at major competitions!

Horses WERE NOT 'doped'...read article carefully

Ok, I am going to play devil's advocate here. Is it possible the *topical* ointment was truly used in the same manner we use Absorbine?

It really upsets me that non-horse media is passing off this as 'doping' a horse. The horses were not 'doped'. It's a topical cream used for pain management, not like Bute.

They are accusing the teams of using this cream to burn the horses legs to get them to jump higher. Hmm, this drug is oobviously approved for use on horses outside of the Olympics for pain. Just because it provideds a warm sensation doesn't mean its cruel. Think of Icy-Hot. The heat is what makes it work!

While I can't get inside the heads of the persons who used it, I can offer my opinion.... The teams used it like we use Absorbine (which also burns like he11 when you first apply it), and got caught! I doubt it was anything more.

I am very upset with how the media has handled this, and now non-horse and horse people alike are up in arms over an Olympic equestrian team 'doping' their horses.

Except, they knew it was an illegal substance, and used it anyway. I am wondering why they would use it, when it is not really that strong a medicine to really help with anything.

Highhorse, I totally understand what you are saying, but why use an illegal substance in the Olympics, knowing it could get you kicked out? It is not like they didn't know...

Ya know, I have thought this over and over. With so many legal alternatives, I can't figure out why they chose to stick with this one.

However, you know how those 'set in their ways' trainers can be. If they've used it for many years, it can be hard to convince them otherwise. Maybe they just assumed they wouldn't be tested for such a drug.

Again, I don't jump, nor do I know many jumpers. If using this is a problem in this sport, I wouldn't know. I am just an objective onlooker who thinks this is no more than a sensationalized story.

Here's the actual drug facts on Capsaician, not the speculated by the media uses.

"Cayenne (topical capsaicin)
Capsaicin ointment, applied four times per day over painful joints in the upper or lower limbs, reduces pain caused by osteoarthritis,372 and a plaster containing capsaicin applied to the low back for several hours per day provided relief from chronic low back pain in one study.373 Other uses of cayenne or capsaicin for sports and fitness have not been studied."

I will also play a sort of devil's advocate. Isn't capsaicin the same thing found in paprika? Lots of people feed it to their horses to enhance coat color and such. Maybe they just want beautiful mounts. Still, after working so hard to get to the olympics I wouldn't get near anything that could dq me even if it did make my horse look amazing.

Capzacin is found in alot of animal feeds from one ingredient or other. It's also found in topical ointments. I use it on sore muscles quite often.

Not knowing how sensitive the test is, could it be possible that a groom using it for themselves could have contaminated the horses, or their feed, without realizing it? Could it have been in the feed as a contaminate?

Hmmm...considering how much Asian cooking uses peppers (which all contain capzaicin), could they have possibley INHALED it from someone's lunch? (or a nearby food vendor?)
