Our first run at the jumpers

Sunday,0500 I crawl out of bed after braiding and bathing to who knows when the night before (actually I went to a movie another story)
0800 in the warm up ring, wanting to hurl my coach says "you entered the jumpers??" I was sure I told her, why do the fences look bigger now that I'm mounted than when I walked the course?
0810 into the ring we go, we've done hunters but Rio has never done jumpers and I haven't since well, lets just say a very long time ago
about 45 seconds later I'm over the last fence, I can hear my cheering section yelling, "kick him, get going!" we are clear and I heave a sigh of releif, only to be confronted by the ninth fence, somehow I can't count and forgot about that one. I boot the old boy (he will never be a speed horse, but he is game) and he sails over. The first picture is that fence, he gave me a lovely jump but I look a bit worried. We were clear with a time fault and placed third. We completed two more rounds, all without hurling or dying, remind me again why do I do this?
I'll try to add the picture again, this is the wild jump

WOO HOO!!! good job!!

and you do this because of the crazy exhileration, the love of the feeling of your horse looking for the next fence, the little perk up in their stride when they enter the show ring. all those little things that make the show atmosphere worthwhile

Thanks everyone,
Paso Lover, we get to dodge bears and moose out in our own fields. Although last night it was a cat hiding under the oxer when we jumped, I was so focused I never even saw it!
I love this horse, we've had our issues but we're really starting to trust each other. My coach calls him the George Clooney of horses, when he knows he has an audience he really starts to show off.

You looked great! I wish I was younger,I would love to jump. My oldest granddaughter was jumping small cross rails and she loved it,unfortunately they moved away from where she was taking lessons and she hasn't gotten back into lessons. I really loved watching her jump.

Great job! Hey, I've seen riders on the national team have MUCH more 'interesting' positions over a jump, so you did just fine. Congrats on the ribbons, too!

Why do you do it? Because if you didn't, you'd be standing on the rail, sighing, counting strides and leaning forward every time someone else took a jump. Because it's FUN!

Sarah,
Yes that is the Jurassic Classic (fossils over fences) at Cochrane this year. Great venue, but the warm up area was small and the jumper course very tight. I ride with Sandra Donnelly who is currently reping Canada on the Eventing Team in Hong Kong.
Karen, Rio is in great shape, he is doing dressage with a Grande Prix trainer once a week and it has made a huge difference. Lots of beet pulp too!
We'll be moving to a H/J barn this fall to focus on that and have consistent coaching at shows. I just have to convince him now that he can hack down the road alone without having a heart attack.
