Leadline showing...

Ok I just had a crazy idea lol..one of my friends has a 6yr old son.. I thought of proposing the idea to her of a leadline type class.. what would I need on my horse for that.. a special saddle? or could I use mine? thought it would be a little big :P and what about for the horses halter do I need a leather halter with leadrope or like a lunge line type length. any advice would be nice, thought it would be cute.

I assume you are talking leadline for an open show. You will want to have a childrens saddle, a leather halter to go over the bridle and preferably a leather lead, you do not need something as long as a lunge line.

If you are thinking of western, I have seen some people use their saddle and use the buddy stirrups since they don't have a childrens saddle, but I still like the loook of the kid in a kids saddle with their own "real" stirrups.

Leadline classes are so cute!

I've always put the bridle over the showmanship halter. A set of romal reins are easier for little hands to hold. Some places the adult and child have exactly matching outfits and others they just have similar colors. Oh and most important a helmet! Have fun!

We did the kids saddles only because we happen to have them. I have seen people use big saddles. Of course for my littlest one (3) we still had to use buddy stirrups in the kids saddle. We had them wear matching outfits. Here are pictures of my 2 girls doing leadline. One is saddleseat and one is western. The western we used a nylon halter but it was clean and it matched part of the outfit, leadrope, etc.

This is my oldest riding saddleseat.

This is my youngest riding western. They did a white hat and a black one to match the main on the horse.

I would check where you are showing for specific rules. Although most shows allow you to use a horse, my saddle club doesn't give points/placings to children on horses. I think it is stupid that it has to be a pony, but that's what is...

The other cool thing our club does is that everyone gets a place. They place 1-5 and the rest "tie" for 6th. Now I am not for the everybody has to win idea but I do think it takes a lot of bravery for the kids to get out there and that is the only class they get to do all year, so I like that they each get a mention and a ribbon which always means a ton to them!

LOL! At our "A" shows, all of them tie for 1st place! Unelss it's discipline leadline where they have to trot, then they get placed.

That's the way it was when I was growing up, too--everyone tied for first and got a blue ribbon.

I know the leadline classes around here give everyone a ribbon. I think for the age range, which around here is ages up to 8 it is nice for the kids and makes it "fun". Most people do western, though I have see english a couple of times. The rider and leadrope holder either have matching outfits, or at least color coordinated like already mentioned. I think you would have a ton of fun showing in leadline!!!!!!!!!
