sweaty horse or dirty horse????

So we are going to a show this weekend, and of course it's going to be 90.. I'm so not used to this with my horse.. He gets very sweaty in his stall with a fly sheet on.. He even has a fan on the stall and he still sweats.. So my question is.. for the show this weekend, am i better off bathing him and keeping the sheet off or putting it on and having him get sweaty? he's a palomino, so i don't know if poop stains or sweat stains will be easier to get out in the morning! My old mare was liver so I never had dirt issues! (and she never sweated!)

With my grey and white horses we just bathe them in the morning after a morning warm up.

However, a lot of people will tie up their lighter colored horses the night before the show after a bath. use bailing twine attached to the halter and leadrope in case the horse gets stuck and needs to get loose. Just make sure your horse can reach his hay and water and he will be fine for a night or two tied up. I would suggest letting your horse loose in the stall before the bath for the second night to see if he/she wants to lay down.

Bath him. Pick up the poop. Use extra bedding. keep the sheet off. Fan on him and damp him with water from a damp cloth so he will stay even cooler under the breeze from the fan.

Horses have to cool themself with sweat on their body. The sweat speads across their body because they have a natural detergent in their sweat. 90% of the way a horse cools is from sweat evaporating off body from breeze.

bring him in the house and turn the air down to 60 degrees....just kidding

good luck at the show, nothing is more beautiful than a shining pallie.

If you bath him the day before and then slick him up really good with conditioner all over, neither the sweat or the poo will stick to him very well for a couple of days. The most you'd need to get either off him would be a damp washcloth and a little more conditioner.

And he'll feel so super soft and petable

Thanks everyone! I do have a mesh sleazy hood that i may put on and leave the sheet off.. I don't feel right tying him up for the night. He's only 2 and I think he would not be happy with me! I usually have plenty of time in the morning, so I guess I'll be doing some cleaning. At least he's usually pretty good about staying clean! All this new stuff with getting a Pali... My liver mare had NO white and was a 2 minute bath! Now I have white legs to clip (never done that in my life!) and a light colored horse to keep clean!

Sunlie - I board him out.. I don't think the barn owner would appreciate him in her house! I know, I love how he looks all cleaned up! He's in my avitar. That's from last year, when he was just a yearling.. They grow up so fast!

He is beautiful! I groom a lot of white dogs for their shows. It is a pain to keep them clean for a night. For the light color dogs that get a stain from grass, or pee, or poop. I love the emergency cleaner I use.

#1 All Systems "self rinse" conditioning shampoo. its a high concentrate. 5-1 with water and put some on a cloth or in a spray bottle. It will wipe off any stains so I don't have to rebath.

unless they roll in mud

to find #1 All system products put #1 All systems in the google search bar.

I suggest you try EZall if you haven't.I swear by it and it is easy and quick. If you use it regularly he will shine and dirt and stains will be easy to remove.I got a friend of mine to use it on his halter horses and he was concerned about the horses hair but foung out it really made him slick and shine at the same time.

I would bathe him the night before the show. Scrub his socks/hooves that night as well. Allow extra time in the morning incase you need to clean him up a little more. As soon as he poops, clean it up. Use plenty of bedding. It's going to be so freaking hot this weekend, there is no way I would put a sheet on him! Keep him under a fan, and keep his stall as clean as possible.

Good luck at your show!
