Local Western Show Attire?

I have a couple of greenies I want to get out for some show experience. Since I can't ride more than one horse in the English flat classes, I'm looking to venture into the western classes at the strictly local level.

Other than polocrosse and medieval gaming, I've never competed other than English. Though I think my knight's garb would look great in a western walk-trot class, the judges might not think so LOL!

How can I dress respectably and respectfully without buying a lot of new stuff?

i have black chaps (no fringe) and black lacers with kilties. can I wear them over black riding breeches?

Can I wear a nice polo or button-down shirt? does it need to have long sleeves?

My hubby has one of those leather-covered Troxels that fits me. I'm a riding instructor so wearing a helmet is doubly non-negotiable!

Thanks so much!

The open shows that I show at require Western hat, boots, jeans and a polo shirt. Show open shows around here require the same thing as the quarter horse shows with the show clothes.

I don't know any shows that wouldn't let you use your helmet. I would suggest a long sleeve button down shirt like an oxford and starched blue jeans. If you want to fancy it up you could add a vest or jacket. Check your local goodwill for those. See if you can find a western belt or plain leather men's belt to finish things off.

I hope you have a lot of fun on your new adventure!

Fun shows are usually nice jeans, and a collared button down shirt, belt and hat.

Open shows are full garb, but if you have english horses they probably won't be slow enough to do open.

But if you are going to wear chaps, the black breeches will be fine underneath, no one will tell. However, schooling chaps that don't have scallop or fringe are going to look a little out of place.

Blue denim jeans are taboo in performance classes even in open shows. Since you have chaps, your jods underneath will be fine. Your english shirt, providing it's longsleeved, will work if you wear a vest. Just don't wear the ratcatcher. Helmets are legal. Your paddock boots will work, need to be well polished. Put the word out, perhaps someone can loan you a pair of western chaps, if not, go with your schooling chaps. The idea is to present a clean, neat appearance. Oh, and make sure no goobers on your bit.
