Question How old to show?

How long do you wait to show your foals? Until they're weaned? When mine's old enough I'd like to take him in a few local shows. I'm in no rush at all, as he's only 7 weeks old. But just to plan ahead....Thanks in advance!

I took a 3 month old to a show last year, she was accompanied with her dam and everything went OK. Although I prefer to take them when they are older and weaned.

Depending on where you are showing, there are classes that show the dam and get together, so the foals can be fairly young.

However, I like to have my foals fully weaned AND innoculated before introducing them to the horse world. Lots of big bad germs out there for foals! That being said, once they have all their vaccinations, take her everywhere you can. The more exposure they get when young, the better they are when as they grow up.

Just expect your foal to act like a baby. They will cry and call, they won't stand still, they may go straight up! Just give yourself lots of room in the line up and you should be fine.

I've seen it done many ways at open shows. Some breed shows have dam and foal or get of sire classes. I see most foals ( weanlings at halter ) are weaned and lead and stand ok not always perfect and some need encourageing to jog off. I also see some have the mare at the trailer sometimes baby behaves better when mom is out of sight/ear shot and some people have the mare at the rail that is always more hectic /noisey Most people do allot of work at home leading the foal around without mom for 15 minutes baby gets to know he will see mom again and does not get "stressed" but it all takes time same with if he is weaned they are still babies. I've shown them and helped trainers/ friends and everyone was happy to get out of the ring alive with no blood shed just kidding its not that bad PS make sure if you show before weaning that the mare has current shots and if weaned foal has shots It takes 14-30 days for a shot to become potent ( work/full protection) .
