Question about Western Pleasure

When you ride western pleasure/ or equitation, if you have really long reins can your free hand hold onto the reins or should they just hang???

unless you have romal reins only one hand on the reins. At that, make sure you have 1 finger between the reins. Any more and it's a DQ.

Split reins call for one hand, a finger between the reins is optional. The bight (the long tails) of the reins should fall to the same side as the hand you ride with and fall in front of the saddle down the horse's shoulder. The traditionally preferred (though not required) hand is actually your left hand. Your free hand may not touch the reins (or any other piece of tack including the saddle) or you risk a DQ. The only time you may change rein hands or touch the reins with your free hand is during a trail class.

Romel reins allow you to ride with one hand and hold the tail with your free hand.

Only if you're using a snaffle or bosal and your horse is under the age of 4 (five in some associations)

Reining and speed events have different rules. That's just the performance classes.

Yes, you can only direct rein on a youngster.

So...on the free hand - does it rest on your leg, hang straight down, or assume a position like it's holding a rein, but isn't?

Traditionally in horsemanship you would hold your free hand as if you are holding another rein. In WP it's by the side, not stiff as a board but not flying around.

I don't like seening hands on legs, and most don't do it.

However, you CAN ride pleasure with your freehand by the reins, I do as I am used to riding HMS. But be careful your arm doesn't pump as you jog or lope.
