What do I do with her mane?UPDATE!!

I am going to take Cady to our first show together, and my first show in 20 yrs! I'm slightly nervous, but out to have a good time, and not have any accidents! With those parameters, I should be fine. I do, however, have a question.

What is the proper way to prepare an english pleasure horses mane? My last lesson before this show was cancelled due to my instructor was injured, and she was going to get this question...It's an open show, and fairly laid back, but I want to do the right things...

How long is the mane ?? Do you know how to band ?? I would just band it. Put some mouse in it to give it a wet look, this will make it more manageable and easier to band. Or, go all the way and braid it instead of bands.

Good luck and have fun !!! Don't forget the camera !!

For an english show, you deffinatly don't want to band it, even if it's just a schooling/local show.
If your horse has a long mane, I would pull it. If you don't know how, see if some one can do it for you. If you're doing hunters, you'll want it short so you can braid it. If you don't know how to do hunter braids, I can find a link to show you how probably. If you're doing jumpers, pull it but not as short. Maybe 4-5 inches long. I would also do the same if you're just going in a pleasure class.
You want your horse to look neat and tidy. So a long mane never cuts it in the english rings. No matter how pretty they are. lol

We showed Deisel eng and west on Sunday and his mane was banded, we didn't have time to do it between classes. In our area a banded mane is fine for the open or local shows because a lot of the horses show both, so if they drop them down because the mane isn't braided that's fine we do the best we can. But if it's an eng only show we braid mane and tail.

Ok, her mane is about 4-5 inches long and kinda thin. I was thinking of banding it, the show is both english and western and games. I will only be taking her in english classes. I have seen many horses at this show go in the ring with banded manes. I was also wondering if I could just let it be hanging if it is neat and tidy. Is that against protocol?

Band it. I wouldn't just let it be. Since you said her mane is thin, do lots and lots of very thin/small bands. It will make her mane look thicker and more even. Pics would help!

When you band it, you put in a series of many small ponytails right? Then do you trim the ends to make it look all even, or do you just let it be?

It all depends on the type of english class you're going in. If it's just a flat clas, like pleasure or a command class, I would just leave it. Make sure it's on the right side, not left. And use some hair spray to make sure it lays flat. Lots of people just leave it for thoes classes, and jumpers. And since it's just a local show, and not Trillium or A, you'll be just fine.

That's right, a bunch of pony tails. No, don't trim them, if you do it right, it'll look even.

Oh, great, it has to be on the right side??? Her mane naturally falls to the left...not alot of time to retrain it now If I band it to the right it should stay, don't you think?

I'd think that if you band it on the right and her mane lays to the left, then you'll get a mowhawk appearance. I'd also suggest practicing banding before you go to the show. It sometimes takes a little while to get all the kinks worked out if you've never done it before.

*I only showed western, but was around lots of english riders, I never noticed that they all banded on the right side. They just did it whichever way the mane lay.

If her mane falls naturaly to the left, then yes you can always band it to the right, but do it close to the base of the mane. And then leave it for a few days. It will lay nicely on the right side, just remember to use hair spray the day of the show. My sister does this all the time for her jumper. Thin manes are extremly easy to work with. It'll fall over in no time.

Does anyone have a really good picture of what it should look like banded? I've looked on Google, but can't find any close-ups. Thanks!

Manes

Hi,

I would just band it on the size that it naturally lays. I'd be afraid to band it on the wrong size and leave it in for too long. The bands can break the hair.

I'd heard that more thinner bands make the neck look longer and less thicker bands make it look shorter.

Also a good tip is to turn the bands on the sides of the pony tails. It will help them lay flatter.
Sky from several years ago at a show. You can barely see that she'd banded. Her mane is still a little long but we were only showing for fun.
