Weanling class

So in August we will be taking our weanling to a show. I am wondering how on earth you get that MO HAWK mane to lay down for banding? Any advice?

You can start with no braiding what you can and putting a slinky or mane tamer on it, however we would use hair spray to make it stick to the side we wanted it on. make sure you pull as close as you can to the babies neck when you go to band it. if you pull the banded little section straight up it stays straight up. but when and doubt HAIR SPRAY!

I usually band mine up while they're still damp from their bath the night before and then put a well fitted slinky over the whole thing.

Then that morning I just have to check things over and maybe fix a few bands and we're ready to go. Far less stressful than trying to band a weanling at their first show.

And yes, hairspray or hair gel for all the little whispies that like to pop out.

YEP... band it wet, use some hair spray or gel, we us the gel,and slinky over top. In the morning fix the stragglers and you should be good to go!! Oh.. I also would not cut it until you band it and have it laying down!

Whoever invented banding should be horse whipped!

No doubt! Surely a means of medival torture!

Especially on wiggly weanlings that don't want to stand still.

Thanks for the help. Now with this being an open show/futurity (non circuit) should I stll get a weanling show halter? Or do you think a nice leather halter would be just as acceptable? I have a weanling show halter but he is buckskin and the halter is a light tan. Thus not looking good on him at all! Let me know what you all think!

Regardless of the color, a well fitted show halter will always look more professional.
