Questions about Halter showing - "UPDATE PICS"

I was wondering about the halter shows. What you would look for in the horse and what to go about doing to get into the halter classes. Not nessicarily (sp?) showmanship as of right now, just the halter class. I will get some pictures of the yearling I was hoping to do this with. Thanks.

Halter is based not only on the handling of the horse, but the horse's overall balance and movement.

Things I look for in a halter prospect (stock horse breeds, I dont do TB, Draft or Arab):

Head- refined, wide forehead, small well shaped ears, bright, clear eyes, strong jowls

Neck- good lenght, clean throat, straight and slim (no giagantic crest of fat! )

Chest-well muscled, plenty of room for heart/lungs, good sloped shoulder

legs-should be straight, clear of flaws, well muscled forearm/gaskin

back/barrel-short back, longer underline, should be well rounded and fit

hips-well muscled hindend but not to excede porportions with his/her front end

Again, his back legs should be straight and clear of flaws

Im sure Ive left something out and someone will tell you.

What breed of horse are you showing? Open or breed shows like AQHA, APHA or ApHC? If you are getting serious, it can be tough competition out there!

The modern halter horse (stock type) looks something like this:

The yearling APHA filly we just got. We actully get her on the 25th. I would really like opinions on her prospect as a halter horse. Will get pics asap.

yearlings are tough to judge.

look over at Tommy's pics in meet the horse

his head is a little too long between eye and muzzle.

throat latch and neck are good.

neck tie in could be a little higher but it is fine

front legs are straight and nice forearm with pretty good shoulder

back is about an inch too long, but muscling up the top line helps hide it

should have sloping croup with good flow to tail set

should have nice long hip

back legs should be nice and straight with attention paid to hock set
some judges like posty hocks. we don't care, we wan to ride later so Tommy's hocks set under him a little more than some like with a little more angle to them.

outer gaskins are easy to get, inner gaskins are genetic and look for nice inner gaskins, hoof angles should match pasterns and should not be too upright or too sloping....hee hee....nice advice on that one

front and back legs when viewed rom fron or back should be straight as an arrow.

chest should be fairly wide set to allow growth, some like a veee in the muscling

it's hard to show halter especially aqha & apha

you may want to try pinto first, much cheaper, less fierce competition, and more fun.

you gotta also be carefull to not over train and ruin the horse too.

take your time and have fun. it's really to late to start now and hope to get into any yearling shows at apha and next year as 2 yo the horses will be over 16 hands and at least 1300 lbs with some at 16. 2 or 3 and over 1500 lbs

back to add...if you want to show breed shows at 2yo & up, you almost have to have a horse with specific halter breeding to do any good at all.

please post pics and pedigree

Dang...one more thing

I was not trying to imply that a halter horse should look like Tommy. Just that he is a yearling with only one month of fitting. Just a comparison thing since they are both yearlings.

Gorgeous filly! Congrats! She looks to be performance bred, rather than halter bred. Like Ron said, if you wanted to get into it through APHA, it can get really tough as most of the big guys are strictly halter bred.

She'll make you a nice riding horse no doubt!

Well, here are some pics. Not the greatest right now. Trying to take them while my son napped and the neither horse would cooperate. Go figure. And of course it rains right before I go out there.

Not real impressed with the people we got her from. Scabs all over her nose. Her left eye was swollen when we picked her up. GRRR. Cuts all over her legs too!

But anyways. Here she is. Registered name - DAR CHICOS REBELMCCUE - Barn name - Callie.

and ofcoure couldn't leave Pheonix out

In pics #3 and 5, her hind feet look turned out (cow hocked, I think this is called). It may just be how she stands, though. She's very flashy and I love her pink nose!

Well, she doesn't normally stand with them like that I just tend to get pics with all the really weird angles. She does need her feet trimed up horribly. They are horendus in the back. I got a farrier already coming out to do Phoenix who was way over due. Farrier moved and now its like pulling teeth to get anyone to come out. I think I'll Learn how to do it and not worry about it anymore.

She is definetly cow hocked, but some people actually ask the farrier to make them a little that way, Like mules pulling and stuff. It gives them better traction. For halter you may not want that though. I'll bet she would make a nice riding horse. They are both very colorful.

GLad you missed the hail. That would hurt
