Manes for show

I plan on showing my APHA stallion competively this 2006 season. I plan on showing him in halter, and maybe a few riding classes; but my main focus is halter. Right now he has long mane about 6 inches long. Should I shortin it up? Or keep in long. I usually like the shorter look but I think he looks good with longer hair. I dont know if this pic will help. I am looking for a clean professional look. Thanks for your help!

You should absolutely shorten his mane. Shorten it to be the width of four fingers. Each horse's neck is different, but his looks clean, and would look good short. I know it's a matter of personal opinion to pull or leave a mane natural, but to be competative, you'll have to shorten it. His mane is also thinner, so it'll be a breeze to pull.

They also like to see it banded. If you don't know how, get someone to show you. A poorly banded horse looks sloppy.

For showing halter you'll need it trimmed up shorter. Preferably about the width of 3 or 4 fingers, but no longer. Definitely have it banded when you show. I usually do it the night before, as well as any clipping or whatever. And bathe in the late afternoon before the day of the show. Put a sheet on them and a slinky to keep his mane in tact.

I love showing Halter, its my favorite. I'll be showing my paint filly this spring too.

a slinky is a mane banders best friend! It is so much easier to have a neat banded mane if your horse has had a slinky on. I usally trim the mane about 2 weeks before and use a slinky 24/7. then the mane will lay nice a neat for you to band it. Its so much work! but it looks so cool when you see the finished mane!

Ah, always wondered how they got those manes so slick and neat! I like how the slinkys look on the horses.

Banding sounds like a lot of fun , it reminds me that I should be practicing my braiding.

Good luck at the shows tbzeekie and everybody else!

When I show at halter, my horses
manes are long. I don't like short
manes. I know I probably should
cut them but I don't. Since you
are showing in big shows you'll
probably want it cut short.
